I have started to develop bruising on my stomach for no apparent reason. I'm a little worried about this. It doesn't really hurt but it is a big bruise and I haven't been doing anything overly strenuous over the holidays. I haven't bumped into anything either. Has anyone else developed bruising while on imuran? I'm due for my blood work again in a few days, idk if that will show something. Thanks

My daughter suffers bruising ever since she started taking 6MP, and was eventually diagnosed with ITP which her hematologist swears is chronic and not induced by the drug, but I have my doubts. Low platelets and as a result, poor clotting and bruising, are known side effects of these meds and some patients will experience them.

Anyway, it would be worthwhile to ask your GI or GP about a referral to a hematologist, or even just for a CBC to check your platelet levels. My daughter has to get regular infusions to treat her low platelet counts and prevent her from having spontaneous bleeding (the bruising she generally just has to live with until her platelets are low enough to justify infusion.)

My sarah developed two unexplained so far on aza, one on her ankle and the other on her hand. Although she can't remember doing either after discussions with her swimming coach we decide hand bruise was likely the hitting of handes while training.

The gi on reporting said if it continue to happen she would add a blood test to check clotting factors.

My son had weird bruising too while on 6mp. Dr. checked his platelets and his ended up being fine but it is worth checking. We later found that his WBC count was low at that time and his dose was a bit too high for him. I don't really know if the two were correlated.
