Hello everybody,
I am 33 yr old MALE and diagnosed with crohns disease on imuran 50 mg Twice daily which I have been on for last 3 months. We are planning to extend our family and my wife is perfectly healthy and not on any meds.
I would like to know if its safe to have a baby when a man is taking imuran?
I have no idea what imuran has any effects on sperm or any risk for congenital malformations.I tired to look up and did not get any info. My doctor didn't know the answer either.
Anybody can help? Its very important I know this because I do not want a unhealthy child.

Thanks you.

I have no personal experience but have found an article on medscape.com regarding safety of drugs in male IBD patients wishing to conceive which may be of interest to you.
It does seem ridiculous that even your doctor can't advise you on such an important issue.
I wish you all the very best.

Imuran can negatively affect male fertility, however there have been no real studies to support this claim. My doctor told me it should be fine, and extensive research gave me very mixed opinions.

From what I have read, it may just lead to frustration while trying to conceive, with no real problems if you do. Because of a lack of studies and sufficient evidence, they say men on Imuran should not try to conceive a child. I have read many people claiming to have conceived perfectly fine children while on Imuran, and some saying they had troubles conceiving (but no reports of disabled babies).

Besides, you're on a low dose. I'd give it a try. If you are in doubt, maybe give the company who makes the drug a call and see what they might have to say) although I think they will say you should not.

Please do not make a delicious based on my information alone. This is based on what I have read and personal experience only (I do not have any children.. Yet..).
