I need some advice. If you had to choose from Remicade, Humira or Imuran what would you choose? Why?

As much as I dread going on these medications and with my luck I'll be that 1% that has a bad reaction, but it's time for me to take control of my abscesses before they get out of control. I have a feeling my doctor is going to suggest Imuran again. Should I go with that or would Humira or Remicade be better?

Please help. Any advice will help

I have not. I have been on prednisone, remicade, humira, methotrexate (oral/injections), cipro, and flagyl.

If I do go on Remicade I need to make sure it's pretty well covered because I'm a university student and pretty much all my money goes to school/rent/bills.

If I go on humira again, again it has to be pretty well covered and I would do syringes this time because I did not do well with the pen.

These are the listings my school health insurance says they'll cover.

Humira

DIN Description
2258595 HUMIRA 40MG/0.8ML INJ
9857294 HUMIRA 40MG/0.8ML INJ (PEN PACK) (ON)
99100385 HUMIRA 40MG/0.8ML INJ (QC)
97799756 HUMIRA 40MG/0.8ML PRE-FILLED SYRINGE
97799757 HUMIRA PEN 40MG/0.8ML INJ

Remicade
DIN Description
2244016 REMICADE 100MG INJ

-I thought this was weird because I didn't think you could do Remicade as an injection and it had to be through intervenous. Would it make sense for my school health benefits to cover that? I don't pay much at all for the insurance. It seems like that would be too nice of them

Imuran
4596 IMURAN 50MG TABLET
2244895 IMURAN 50MG/ML INJ (HOSP USE ONLY)

If it only says 50mg tablet, does that mean I couldn't do the 150mg the doctors suggest?

Oh, and for what it's worth, although I've been on heavy meds before they completely scare the crap out of me

I'm not sure but I would definitely find out for sure on all of those before going forward, sorry I can't help you there. But, I did want to say it can take awhile for Imuran to work, do you have that kind of time with where your CD is currently at(active wise)?

Did Remicade or Humira work well for you? And also remember with Imuran that you will have blood tests, usually weekly, biweekly, monthly to bimonthly or something similar. I guess you also have that with Remi(at least we do) but it is done at each infusion.

Hope someone with more experienced advice comes along and I wish you great results with whatever treatment you choose.

I'm actually doing really well without meds right now...except I have the abscesses. That's my only problem right now and I hate that abscesses are considered severe enough to go on meds. So with that, I would have time to wait for the Imuran to kick in. The abscesses are there, but they don't really bother me.

By the way, my original one never healed. It's still about a 4 inch incision and continues to drain so now both sides drain lol. No pain, but I don't want to leave this and risk it getting worse.

I don't know why but crohns has been really bothering me lately..psychologically. I've just been worrying about the risk of cancers/serious consequences of going unmedicated but at the same time the same risks are there with medication. I don't know why it's been taking a lot of my attention lately as I don't usually think about it

I know there are times that I am so happy for the results I have seen for C on medication but I have times of worry about the side effects so I think it may be fairly normal for these concerns to wax and wane, especially when the CD is active in any way.

Hi KWalker,
Like you, I seem to be allergic or react to everything I've tried so far, I am recovering from Humira which I stopped 6 weeks ago as I had a severe itching rash which they tell me is very rare and the dermo and GI have never seen this reaction before, hence I am on 50 mg of Pred to keep the itching at bay and a strong antihistamine at night so I can sleep through the extreame itching. I am running out of medication options, have been through Imuran, Salofalk, Methotrexate and Humira since January. So I can sympathise with you on that one. once off the Pred I am planning to go off the meds for a while and try to manage by diet. I know this is not recommended, but the side effects far out way the C in my case... even with perianal crohns. I have recently rejected my GI's recommendation to start Remicade as mentally I don't think I could tolerate another reaction at this point. We are damned if we do and damed if we don't. I believe if your gut instinct is telling you to take meds to get your situation under control then you should listen. Yes all the meds are scary but if they can help your abscess to heal then you will gain back some normality and so psychologically you should be in a better place.. If you can tolerate Imuran I would start there, yes it takes longer to work but doesn't come with the black warnings/side effects that Remi and Humira do.. I know I would rather be on something less freaky than I had to but I haven't had a choice, probably like you. Although they are proven to work faster at clearing your condition, its a catch twenty two. You always have the option to move up if the Imuran doesn't work. Best of luck and hope I have been helpful and not to opinionated. Wishing you healing soon.

Have you taken a look at David's new thread? I'm on my mobile or I would post it. It is in the research(books media research) forum, the newest thread. It has some numbers info that may apply to this. Just thought I would give you a heads up.

No I haven't. I'll have to have a look a look at it when I get a second. Jessasha and Clash you have both been very helpful. I definitely need to think long and hard about this. I'm wondering if its worth it to start something right now or right after christmas to avoid any possible side effects over the holidays.

Imuran worked great for my daughter for awhile (she's now on 6MP), but I don't think it's regarded as especially effective for existing fistulae and abscesses?

Yeah, see I didn't think so either. I always thought Remicade was pretty much the only solution for abscesses. If I do end up back on Remicade I'll have to go through the whole trillium thing again and see what I can do as far as coverage
