I've been on Imuran since March and lately I've began developing painful acne like cysts which I've never had before and my hair won't stop falling out. Im afraid to brush my hair because so much falls out. Does this go away with time because my hair is sooo much thinner than before and I'm afraid i won't have much hair left? Im not even on that high of dose only 50 mg though i weight around 86-92 pounds.

It may be due to the imuran
You couldtry taking biotin capsules.
Natural sources of biotin are eggs if you are able to eat them
I had a hair loss problem and used a biotin shampoo and took biotin 2000mcg daily and was able to eat some eggs .Took about 6 months for hair growth to resume and improve.
This was not the result of imuran however.
I did try imuran but had a reaction and had to discontinue it.
Hugs and best wishes

Hi I got cyst like breakouts which the GI consultant told me are an external effect of the poor immune system and will be slow to clear due to the slow healing you have with Azathioprone. So it is considered normal ( if unsightly :-() and has eventually become less frequent as I have stayed on the meds ( 18mths now). The first 9 months we the worst and it has levelled out since, fingers crossed that yours does too, just try to keep them scrupulously clean and don't use anything to inflame the cyst or you can infect surrounding area.

I've been on Imuran generic Azathioprene since 2007, between 100-125mg/day with zero evident side effects. Bumped to 150mg/day in February due to a flare, and after 3 months began to see additional hair loss, though I'm not going bald yet, thank goodness!

I also tend to get a lot of tiny 'micro cycsts' as I call them, which look like little bumps or skin-colored pimples around my chest and neck and upper arms, but my mother has them too, and i believe that's more heredity in my case. I did have skin tags in some areas prior to starting the Azathioprene, and they cleared completely after about a year on the meds.

Hair loss can be attributed to other causes, though - thyroid issues, for example, or even stress... My last few months of college my hair was falling out in gobs, and it scared the hell out of me - but I was preparing to graduate, and under a lot of stress, and once i graduated, the fallout stopped. Being diagnosed with Crohn's, or having a flare, can also be stressful on its own, so consider that as well.

Good luck!

I have googled imuran side effects and boy there can be a lot.. Now eveyone is different ]as some have no side effects and some have lots.
-hair loss, skin tags, cysts, skin cancer and lymphoma from long term use, pancreatitis, one lady had pneumonia 3 times as lowered imune system. Once you stop you still can have side effects later.
But as I have been reading some people have no effects and some do.
