in the hospital

exactly 2 weeks ago I was told I had crohn's and admitted to the hospital for the first time ever. I originally went to the doctory's because I was having fevers with shaking and chills and abdominal pain. Well I was admitted and started on iv antibiotics and then sent home with PO antibiotics along with steroids and pentasa. so then I had raging diarrhea and they suspected cdiff....well that was negative. Then I started to feel better. Then came last Tuesday and the shaking and fevers came back. They did a stat CT scan on wed: no abscess no fistula but still alot of inflammation in the ileum. So Wed evening they started me on cipro and flagyl and told me to take tylenol scheduled if needed for the shaking/chills/fevers and to go to ER for any breathrough fevers. Well Wed night I went to bed at 10pm and took tylenol....woke up shaking at 2 with slight temp so i took more tylenol.....woke up again at six with slightly higher temp so I took more tylenol. By 730 my temp was 102.7 so off to the ER I went. They admitted me for IV antibiotics. My wbc was elevated compared to Tuesday when I had outpatien labs drawn.

The GI doc thinks it seems unusual that I would have a crohn's fever with shaking/chills 2 weeks into steroid treament. They are concerned about an infection elsewhere. Originally I was gonna have an outpatient colonoscopy this coming Wed but now I will be having it tomorrow (sat) at 8 am. Oh joy...my prep starts in about an hour.

They are also consulting an Infectious Disease specialist to be sure they are not missing anything and to be sure I dont have something else going on with the Crohn's. I hope they get that all straightened out this time because the shaking/chilling/teeth chattering crap is for the birds. Well actually this whole thing is for the birds....but you all know that.

Anyhow....thank god for internet access in the hospital. I'll be spending the rest of the day pooping. Hope you all have a good one.

Hi Antonella, I hope they get you straightened out quickly. I hate being in the hospital, but it is one of those necessary evils we all must do from time to time. Feel better soon!

Haha...I enjoyed the last line of your post, Antonella! :ylol2:

When I was first admitted to the hospital (before I knew I had Crohn's) I had SO many doctors coming in to see me. I had surgeons, GIs, internists, infectious disease...and they all had teams, so I think I ended up telling my symptoms to like 20 different people in the end. Not to mention they had training days on Mondays, so I got to be the human puzzle for med students shadowing doctors, haha.

Glad you are getting things done tomorrow morning! Thanks for the updates :)

There are worse ways to spend a day than pooping, I guess ... ok not many, I grant you ..... :D

Hope they get you all straightened out soon!

Best of luck to you in getting this thing figured out and for an "uneventful" colonoscopy. Hugs from across the state:)

Hi Antonella

can I just ask? do birds have teeth? lol

thank you all!!! so far the prep is going in smoothly and coming out smoothly.....what more can you ask for right?! Thank god I have a good friend who brough me good toilet paper and isn't making me use hospital TP! My lil angel to the rescue........and now it's back to poopin :)

I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch. I hope they can get all of this taken care of so you can go home. I'll be praying for you

Sorry to hear you're in the hospital. Hope all is going well for your prep. EJ says get the orange flavor for your anesthesia tomorrow.

The hospital TP is the worst! Good luck with the tests. I hope they find the source of the problems and can get you feeling better soon!

Please stay in touch and let us know what's going on.

Well yesterday was AWFUL with a capital AWFUL. I went straight from my colonoscopy to a small bowel follow through. I was so doped up (thankfully) after the scope that drinking that barium for the sbft wasn't that bad. The bad part was getting on the table and having them tilt it all over the place.....hello nausea! After that I was curled in a ball in pain until 3am....pain meds took the edge off a bit thank goodness. Once 3am came though I was able to straighten out my legs and breathe easier....AMEN! So toda they are sending me home. They said my scope showed inflammation (well duh, lol) and that my SBFT didn't look bad. So they are blaming the recurring feverrs/chills on crohn's and not another infection. I sure hope they are right this time around. I have had almost 72 hrs of IV antibiotics and will be going home on a 10 day course. Hopefully this will guide me into remission. Thank you all for the good thoughts and prayers!

Hope all gets better, you have come to the right place for information and support. Im sure I can speak for everyone when I say we are here for you and hope to see you have a qwik and fully recovery.

Sincerely and Respectfully, Gary

Sorry you are in the hospital. When I was first diagnosed, it took a while for them to figure it out too. I, too, saw what felt like every intern, resident, and team in the hospital. Now I am my GI doc's favorite test for his students. Whenever I have an appointment I always end up talking to the residents first. He loves to use me as a teaching case since my crohn's came up so strangely.
I hope everything goes well for you!!

Glad they didn't find anything additional and glad you are getting out of the hospital. Hopefully the antibiotics will knock it out and you will be feeling way better soon!

Lilly
