I have IBD and recently discovered my 1 yr old son had a perianal abscess. He got sick very quickly within the 24 hrs after I discovered it which ultimately ended with him having to be transferred to the Children's Hospital and having surgery immediately after late Sunday evening for I&D and to explore to see if it was a fistula or just localized abscess. Turned out to just be an abscess about the size of a half dollar filled with a lot of pus but no fistula. They did a vessel loop drain and he was a new baby after surgery. He ate, was not vomiting anymore nor had a fever. And the site looked amazing! No redness or swelling. They sent it to pathology but said not to be surprised if it came back as Staph or MRSA and continued to treat him with strong Iv antibiotics. He was discharged yesterday on Tylenol and Augmentin and has since had awful diarrhea obviously. I've been giving him baths right after each bm as instructed but today it seems he's having a lot of the same redness and hardness like he did prior to the I&D and very little drainage. I put a call into his surgeon and we are suppose to see her tomorrow to check my concerns. I figured I'd come here in hopes to get advice on how to help him and if the redness/hardening is normal. My concern also is that perhaps he has IBD also. He does have similar symptoms but the pediatricians said it would be very early for him to have it even though I sure have had symptoms my whole life and was dx as a child. *sigh* I'm just nervous :(

I'm so sorry to hear about your son, that sounds so sore for him. I have no advice, we have never dealt with this. I hope he gets some relief soon and you get good results from the dr.

So sorry to hear about your son, so difficult! Hope the doc can help. I would ask the pediatrician to have him screened for IBD anyway. It may not be very common at his age, but still possible, and with the genetic connection. My son was dx'ed after an peri-anal abscess.

Hi . Tx army wife . Wow when I read your post it was like a flash back my boy is 6he got his first perianal abscess when he 15 months and for four years he got one every few months and no one apart from me suspected IBD I went to so many different doctors I shouted and screamed , I just new something was wrong . I finally got a doctor to listen and she had seen Lewis so many times for iv antibiotics they finally scoped him last September , he had a really bad infection , he has had 4 fistulas layer open in his short life and he's going back I. To or row to have 2 more layer open they are generally the same ones he has cleaned out and layer open as they just don't seem to heal ,
He has been on infliximab and azathioprine since last October , had he been diagnosed earlier I don't think he would be on these strong meds ,if I had my time again I would of pushed harder .
Ay advice I can give is dont give up unles you get definite answers because Lewis crohns is manly per anal it dosnt show up on blood tests as there isn't much inflammation in his colon or small intestine . If you need any advice don't hesitate to private message me m I hope I havnt scared you but this type of disease is really difficult to manage , all my thought are with you and your baby ,xx oh we're in the u,k aswell Manchester to be exact ,xxxx
