Hello all,
I am so happy to have found a forum where I can share and hopefully learn about this disease. Just wanted to introduce myself and tell I guess "my story"? You can call me Spring, I am 22 years old and I just recently graduated college in May! What was supposed to be a year off where I would travel and do the necessary things to gear up for grad school next year has turned into a disaster.
I should start off by saying I've always been not the most healthy person. I've had kidney stones twice (surgery both times), chronic bronchitis due to debilitating pneumonia when I was little, and I tore my Achilles tendon due to tendinitis. So it is hard to say when I started feeling sick because I've dealt with sickness my whole life. But if I had to pinpoint the first trip to the doctors that I can contribute to crohns it would have to be three months ago.
I got really bad canker sores in my mouth and on my tongue that made it impossible for me to eat and drink. one month later to the day I got the sores again and made a second trip. Got diagnosed with herpes on this trip. Even though my body was tired, my back hurt, and I lost partial movement in my hands and feet as well. Was given an anti viral and told to go home. Well two weeks later after completing the anti virals I was worse. Couldn't get out of bed somedays and my body felt like it was hit by a train. Third visit. got blood work to rule out mono. My doctor told me that I had low white blood cells and signs of inflammation and infection which could account for my tiredness and swollen lymph nodes. By this time it has been about 2 months of feeling unwell.
Finally, after not feeling well for so long I started to have blood in my stool. It was then that I realized that since everything started my bowel movements had been messed up, ranging from D to C, and just different. I went back to the doctor and with this added information she scheduled me for more blood work (IBD tests) and to see a GI.
The tests came back positive for IBD and I went for a colonoscopy. My doctor told me I am confirmed with colitis with crohns. He also told me though that my appendix was abnormally shaped and inflamed. whatever that means?
I feel dumb I didn't think of crohns earlier since two cousins on my dad side have it, my grandmother had colitis, and my grandfather died of colon cancer.
Anyhow, right now I am on suppositories which are a really generic version of Canesa. The thing is I don't have prescription insurance and my overall insurance is subpar so I am struggling with this all financially (plus I am trying to go to grad school while paying off undergrad loans).
Current ailments I have are pain in the tummy (obviously), bloody stool, severe joint pain, rashes and psoriasis on my scalp, and canker sores.
Trying to figure this all out so that I can feel better and get stable money wise for my future grad school endevor. any advice is most welcome! thank you everyone for listening and hope to learn from you all.

Glad to see you found your way here, I just joined today myself. Sorry to hear your struggling- I know how much it totally SUCKS! While I can't say I know exactly how you feel- I did have loss of feeling or bloody stool- we share the usual symptoms. I lost roughly 80 pounds before I had surgery- I'm a big guy (6'3,215 and an avid bodybuilder) so loosing weight was so damn aggravating. I had surgery in May '10 and have been on Remi ever since. I would seriously recommend getting surgery and a "big hitter" immunosuppresant. If you have any questions feel free to message me and I hope you feel better!

Really sorry about the bad run of luck there. Careful on the jumping to surgery option though I feel obligated to say. That's something you can't go back on and personally I'd like to exhaust all other options first but for some it works like tclark there.

Quick question though is are you still registered with your undergraduate school? I'm in University right now as well and we have a health plan through school that pays for like 90% of prescription pills. I know I stay registered with my school for up to 5 semesters after leaving so that may be an option to look at although I'm not sure what it's like in the states or whereever you are.

Also look into the actual drugs and drug companies themselves and see if they can help you out on a plan. I know Remicade has some sort of kickstart plan but I'm not sure about others.

Thirdly if your parent's have a health plan could you be eligable under them? I know I'm covered under my parent's until I'm 21 (20 now) and until I'm 25 if I'm a student.

Best of luck and hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Spring! Welcome to the family.

There are quite a few people here that are in school with their disease. You'll find a way to make it work. Just hang in there. Congratulations on graduating from college! That's wonderful. What's your degree?

We have some things that might be useful for you in the Extra Intestinal Manifestation Forum. Take a peek. http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=81 Here you'll find Arthritis, Mouth, and Skin sub-forums. I hope you're well, and again, welcome.

Wow! I woke up this morning not doing very well and saw all these responses and felt better about things. Its amazing what sharing and having others understand can do to a person :) Just to answer some questions...
tclark, I have lost quite a bit of weight myself. That part has been rough for me cause I have always been a healthy but curvy woman and never concerned with weight. In the past the line "oh you've lost weight" was considered a compliment to me but now I can't help get irritated by it. And I was in a sorority in undergrad so I get to hear it a lot from my sisters who think me losing is a good thing and not a sign that I am sick.
crazycanuck- I agree about not jumping too soon into surgery. Luckily my cousin has been through all this since he was 11 (34 now) and can offer some advice when I can get a hold of his backpacking gypsy self. He had surgery eventually but I am just gonna weigh the options for me when I get there. In reference to insurance, my university never covered any health stuff even when I was student. I am currently under my parents plan which is a sucky plan. No prescription coverage, only 12 dr visits a year (which i completed 4 dr visits ago), and it doesn't cover most things (colonoscopy included) until i am up to my 5,000 deductible. I am currently at 3,250. I am looking into other options, including getting medicine from other countries.
gulugirl- Getting the diagonsis was actually so relieveing for me! and sorry for making you want springrolls, its actually just a nickname of mine but now I do have a craving too.. hmm..
Jessi-I am struggling a little trying to manage this with school. Luckily I am taking online classes and I am all done with applications as of now. I just took one of the four grad tests needed and passed! woohoo! Its rough cause every time I take a test I have to travel 2.5 hours and the test is 4 hours with one bathroom break. ROUGH. Anyhow I studies English, Cinema Studies, and Theatre Arts. I am going to school to be a high school english and drama teacher. don't know how this diease will affect that however. And thank you for the resources!
Del- thank you!!

Thank you again everyone. This brightened my mood today!
