Is anyone on Azathioprine

Lots here are on aza. I take it in combination with remicade, and it has been extremely useful. Seems to have taken care of about 10-15% of issues that remicade didn't take care of. For me, it has been great. Does have some side effects that some people have issues with. For me, it has done a number on my hair line. Good thing I am not overly attached to it!

If you go to the treatment forum, you will find tons of information on aza.

What kind of information were you looking for?

ive been on aza for years with no side effects whatsoever. i get my bloods taken every month and they have came back pretty normal.

I used to be an azathioprine but my prescription lapsed after I dropped my GI doctor. I had no side effects from it and it really helped me a lot. I am now seeing a different GI doctor and I am now taking Asacol and 6mp ( which is very similar to azathioprine. I think azathioprine is a great drug but it takes about 3 to 6 months before it works and you need to do blood work every 3 to 4 months to check your blood counts and your liver function.

Hi, I'm on aziothiaprine and I'm 7 1/2 weeks pregnant. I'm also after some real life experience of it, particularly during pregnancy. I've now been on it for 4 months. I've been losing a lot of hair, but my doctor said it was pregnancy. I'm inclined to believe its the aziothiaprine though as it would be taking affect about now???? Anyone have an opinion? Thanks x

I think aza is doing a number on my hairline, and the rabeprazole/pariet isn't exactly helping either. Since starting those two, I have had a decided recession to my hair line. Given that I am male, it sure isn't pregnancy! (However, my wife does occasionally make me pull my hair out...) I don't really mind the trade off though, I much prefer having a healthy bowel.

I am on aza, have been for nearly two years. Was on throughout my recent pregnancy and have had no side effects from it what so ever!!! And have managed to get completely off steroids thanks to it!!

I am very happy that you and your chld are doing so well. They really need to do more studies regarding the use of azathioprine/6mp and pregnancy. PDA still lists them as Category D drugs, which makes them the second worst category for pregnancy. However, you and others have reported on this forum that there were no problems taking these drugs during pregnancy.

Whenever I go into hospital for treatment they put me on it, amongst other
stuff. Hope you are ok

I was told it was my decision whether to take aza during early pregnancy because theres a theoretical risk up to 12 weeks. So i was on infliximab and still am up to 24 weeks and i started on aza at 13 weeks and will stay on that indefinitely.

When i was in a flare in Jan/Feb this year loads of my hair fell out. I was only on aza then for 3 weeks and i stopped it as i needed something that acted quicker and started on infliximab. My hair loss gradually slowed but i think it was the flare not the aza.

Ive been on aza 7 weeks again now and my hair feels fuller than it has in a long time and im not losing any - but that could be because im 20 weeks pregnant. Maybe after baby is born it will all fall out again :stinks:
