For the last few days I've been suffering with really awful neck pain and I'm finding taking Ibuprofen is the only thing that helps it. Tried paracetamel first which did nothing at all for the pain. Just wondering if this will have any affect on my Crohn's which is pretty much inactive at the minute?

I was told with Crohn's disease that the only thing I could take in that realm would be Tylenol. Anything like aspirin or advil could cause bleeding.

I agree.I think Tylenol is the same as our paracetamol but to be honest I find it useless.
I use prescribed Tramadol but the only thing that helps with my chronic back pain is OTC.Solpadine dispersible or Boots equivalent. The codeine in it can be constipating though.

I find paracetamol on its own no good. In the daytime I take paracetamol and caffeine (usually marketed as Paracetamol Extra, for example, in Tesco) and co-codamol at night.

The occasional Ibuprofen I have found to be OK but I avoid it on a regular basis.

Do you know what has caused the problem in your neck?
I used to have chronic neck pain. At the same time I realised I was pretty stressed and started using a self-hypnosis CD at night, only to find that after a week or two my neck pain had almost gone. I was so tense every night that my neck had been in a permanent state of tension without me realising it.
I also find a good supportive shaped pillow is a must, and I always have problems if I sleep somewhere else without one.

No. Ibuprofen is classed as an NSAID - a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug.

These aren't good for the gut in any way, as they cause ulceration and affect production of various proteins, like prostaglandin, in the gut wall. Paracetamol is fine, as would be Tramadol, so try a different painkiller.

No idea! Started off as having a really achy arm/shoulder on Friday all day, then the last two mornings I've woken up with my neck so stiff and painful I could barely move my arm! It hurt just moving my head this morning. The Ibuprofen took most of the pain away but its still been tender and achy all day.

I thought taking Ibuprofen was bad but wasn't quite sure why (My GI has never said anything about it, but then I've never had to ask till now). I think I will try and get some co-codamol tomorrow and try again with the paracetamol till then.

Thanks guys

Hopefully it will just be one of those odd but passing things.

Re: Tramadol that has been mentioned - in the UK it is a presciption-only controlled drug, and for good reason. As an occasional, short term solution for severe pain it can be very helpful.
However, with longer term use it can be notoriously addictive and can cause severe withdrawal problems. It can also interact dangerously with some other painkillers.

I make those comments with personal and family experience.

I have no problem consuming NSAID. During a spell with a bad shoulder muscle, my doctor even prescribed an 800mg dosage and I had no problem with it.

This is not to be construed as medical advice, and you really need to consult with your doctor. Every CD patient is different.

I would not be too worried about a few advils... I take them when I have big head aches for instance as Tylenol doesnt help. regular basis advil is really not recommended, but a few to calm down a very acute inflammatory joint or muscle condition is ok in my books. Also ask your pharmacist about behind the counter powerfull anti-inflammatory cream. We have ''Voltaren'' here. Only the pharmacist can prescribe and give it to you or your dr. Wishing you well.

Hi kelly,

It sounds like a muscle spasm. Be sure to stay hydrated, sports drinks like Gatorade are an option. I have also been prescribed cyclobenzaprine 10 mg tablets taken 3 times a day and my neck spasm neutralized almost immediately. pm me if you want to talk about alternatives.

I'm wishing you well,

Chris
