is subway and other sandwich shops really healthy?

hi all i basically am struggling to keep food down atm but have been using my "alternative" medication and am looking to get some weight back on me...

i was wondering places like subway are they healthy and safe to eat? i am going into my town soon and would love a nice sandwich maybe a nice white bread with cajun chicken lettuce and bbq sauce but am being put off as ppl say its not healthy and might cause me more problems?

i was just wondering this minute about eating a subway. im having no symptoms and feel guilty about what im eating... though im having no problems with anything ive tried (havent touched curry and never will either!).

i wanted a subway but was also concerned about it... are they full of junk?

one thing i do know, lettuce is hard to digest. as are an umber of the vegetables they use.... they also put tomatos on and whilst they are always lovely and fresh, the seeds can give crohns sufferers problems.

i guess if u are careful with the salad u ask for, it should be ok... and on a white rather than wholemeal/seeded roll.

yes i opted out today and had a tuna mayo jacket potatoe but i didnt realise it was covering in butter and it tasted amazing but half hour later i hated it lol

ill try subway tomorrow now and hopefully can stomach it :)

Subway is one of the most healthiest of junk food. But try a roasted chicken, the mystery meat ( sliced meats) have preservatives and sodium in it, and not very good for us. I only have a little of the lettuce, not much nutritional value in it. Arent you in the UK? If not what country are you in?

Plus, if you have CD or Colitis, the raw veggies in subs may bother you. I had to give up Subway after my diagnosis. Lettuce is a killer.

I've had a couple of subways since having my ileostomy and can't say its affected me but I only have them as a treat so to speak!... i go easy on the lettuce and dont touch tomato and any other salad. Italian BMT, YUM!

they're never going to be as healthy as an actual fresh sandwich because of all the preservatives they use. But its certainly no where near as bad as going having a Big Mac.

I personally do everything in my power to stay away from anything with preservatives, additives, or anything I can't pronounce. I LOVE a good sandwich so have been eating organic bread (no preservatives), organic vegan mayo, organic lettuce, and organic beef or turkey (no preservatives/nitrates/nitrites) and feel fantastic. Obviously lettuce doesn't work for many around here and we have to find what works for us, but in my opinion going as natural as possible is quite important. I think we'll be seeing many more studies like this in the coming years. Just because a food doesn't hurt that day or the next doesn't mean it's not causing you long term issues.

Forgot to mention listeria or bacteria sitting on the sliced mystery meat... I know that the roasted chicken is in the refridgerator and then they nuke it to warm it up. However, I rarely eat subway and so expensive!

In the menu, it tells you whether the meat has artificial ingredients or MSG added to it. I've heard that they are honest with the food.

Also, I don't get any dressing and as long as I do this, my stomach tolerates Subway sandwiches fine.

I have read that alot of forum members have had issues with "lunch meat" so stick with the roasted chicken like suggested above.

We have a local sandwich shop here, owned by good friends of ours, that makes "hand carved" sandwiches with real meat. Hands down the best sandwiches ever. The roast beast, I mean beef, is to die for. But I do agree that Subway is probably better than the rest of the fast food joints.

Just be careful and don't overdo it!

Subway is generally one of my safe foods, as long as I avoid most of the veggies of course. I usually go for white bread and tuna. If I put any veggies on it, I usually just do a few pickles and tomatoes. I know, I know, tomatoes are not a safe food. I do see the skins in my poo later on when I eat tomatoes, but they're so delicious that I can't give them up entirely - I do avoid them completely when flaring though. The only dressing I get is mayo, which has always been safe for me. All in all, I think Subway is definitely healthier and safer than most fast foods that are out there. The only other fast food that I even touch is Wendy's, and there I just get grilled chicken and baked potato. And that's only an ocassional treat. I avoid most other fast foods (McDonalds etc) like the plague!

in terms of fruit and veg, what are ok?

i often fail to get my 5 a day in through veg, as i eat a lot of white pasta, potatoes etc (not sure if those are even good for me?) with meat like chicken, or tuna... bacon sometimes :p

to make up for my lack of veg i often use fruit as my safety net (i say lack, but today i ate a large porton of boiled carrots and broccoli with potatos and mice meat in gravy, and yesterday i ate a stew with potatoes, carrots, leaks, celery (spelling?), onions etc, all boiled down and really soft). however when i look into it, and think about it too, every day fruits like plums, peaches, grapes, apples, oranges etc. are all hard to digest.

currently ive been eating bananas and pealed apples, but what other "easy" everyday fruits should i get? i just cant think....

i eat tomatos but remove the seeds and peel the skin off.

having said all this, i dont experience any problems with any foods.. or any symptoms but bleeding and the occassional pain.. reading that cat-a-tonic can actually see the tomato skin the poo tells me his/her digestive system really isnt working as a normal one should! perhaps its because im in my early stages of crohns? hopefully ill never have problems like that...

I wouldn't recommend eating it every day. It may be the healthiest of the junk, but it's still junk. Make yourself a sandwich if you want something healthy.

But as a treat I don't think you will do any damage eating it from time to time.

The only high street fast food i have is a burger king chicken wrap without anything other tha chicken in the wrap.

As others have said - it is not health food.

Fight the urge. Fast fry some veggies and chicken. Roast a hunk of fish. Eat a can of sardines! Eat some fruit. (It is a fight when 90% of the general grocery store food is full of corn syrup... but it is the most worthwhile fight)

Even if one does not believe that the food ingested has anything to do with the health of the colon - it must be clear that the food ingested does contribute dramatically to overall health.
