Is this a sure sign of a yeast problem?

Hey all

I am still battling nuisance symptoms like heartburn and some slight weird burping lately. I am on PPI's but it doesn't seem to help much as they did once upon a time. I did the yeast test this morning where you get a glass of water, build up some saliva in your mouth and spit it in the glass. I did this before eating or drinking anything. See attached pic as to the result about 20min later. Before I go to my GI or physician with this, I just wanted some feedback. Is this result an obvious sign of a yeast problem?

Thanks

Warning: Picture not for the squeamish! hehe

Wow not for the sqeamish! LOL and not in the morning lol. Yes it certainly looks like it. Is your tongue whitish and tastes gross? Do you eat yogurt? I would avoid yeast products for awhile, I get yeast in my system all the time. I would see your doctor to get rid of it.

My tongue is whitish and yellowish but not always obvious. My mouth is pasty and does taste funny for sure. I showed this to various doctors and they don't see anything obvious but tried me on Nystatin anyway which doesn't seem to help much.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to turn your stomach so early lol

I have to agree, that's not a nice pic to be seeing over breakfast! lol Looks like yeast to me too.

Yeah I just did the Nystatin thing, finished it...didnt do much, but others have said there is a pill so maybe you need to get it to go through your whole system. Eat yogurt it does help and or probiotics, if you get probiotics, dont get the ones on the shelf ...must be from the fridge and check the date on it!.

Interesting, i've never heard of doing that to test! I'm just getting over a yeast problem myself, and i have a nasty taste i nmy mouth all the time, my tongue is yellow and tastes fuzzy....Don't know if that helps. i did take the pill, Diflucen, but it didn't really help, so now the Dr. has me on Nyastatin just to bring a bit of symptom relief until i'm done my antibiotics.

Eeew!!! I think you just cured my prednisolone munchies... Well for the next five minutes anyway!

Never heard of that test, but I rate the diflucan tablet - I find topical treatment always works best when backed up with diflucan. We can buy it over the counter in the Uk so very convenient.

Good luck sorting it!

I'm not opening up the attachment. I'll just guess its yeast.

Drink lots of water. Cut out sugars and breads for a while. That might help. I had that too when I was flaring and GERDing. Change in diet helped me.

Fenway is right, the only really effective way to control yeast is to starve it out by reducing sugar and carbs that convert quickly to sugar.

You can somewhat control it in the mouth by rinsing with Miracle Mineral Solution. I do this once a week or so to kill bad bacteria in the mouth.

Some yeast is always present in the body, but it can get out of control pretty easily, especially if your immune system is not up to par.

Reducing sugar and carbs and bread is a challenge for me as I am trying to gain weight...heck, I am trying not to loose weight! I've never fully gained back the weight I lost since chemo.

I turned in a Rx for Nystatin my new GI gave me a few weeks ago. Worth another shot I figured. The instructions says 5ml, 4x a day. I've always taken 1ml 4x a day. 1ml is recommended for infants. Perhaps thats why it didn't work out so well

I also am trying to ease into some pro-biotic yogurt.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Now I get the picture.

Chemo pretty much decimates the immune system so hopefully with time, your immune system will recover, and the yeast will subside also.

I assume you had Chemo for Cancer. I would seriously consider Low Dose Naltrexone as both a Crohn's treatment, and to prevent a Cancer re-occurrence. One pill a day to treat both is really an easy treatment program.

Hey Dan

I finished chemo for small bowel cancer back in May where I had 11 treatments over 6 months. But during chemo, especially back last winter, my doc and I suspected I may have developed a yeast problem in my digestive tract and gave me some Nystatin. My immune system was pretty compromised at the time. I remember taking 1ml 4x a day but not sure if that was the prescribed dosage where I misunderstood and it should have been 5ml 4x a day. I can't say I fully got over the affects chemo had on my bowels, whatever it did to them. I do know my immune system is back to normal and has been for months. But getting my bowels back in balance is posing to be a big challenge.

Thanks for the drug recommendation. I never heard of that. I will mention that to my GI next time

My doc gave me 1ml a day too....It says to gargle with it...LOL. How the heck to do you gargle 1ml?! LOL
I hope it works for you!

I tried gargling 1ml. It wasn't easy! If you are a little bird, you might have better luck gargling 1ml haha

I was too scared to look at the picture (and I have a strong stomach for stuff like that lol), but from the sounds of things, you might need some antibiotics if Nystatin isn't getting rid of it, or need to take Nystatin for a longer period of time until it does.

Do you take probiotics on a daily basis? If not then I think you should, it can keep things like that at bay and has many other benefits too, like helping with CD symptoms. IBDers tend to have bacterial over-growth issues and taking a good probiotic daily and indefinitely can be very beneficial with things like mouth sores, bad breath, CD symptoms, IBS symptoms and more I'm sure. I've noticed benefits from taking it daily for the last 5ish yrs now. We all should, flaring or not, as it helps keep the gut flora balanced.

:)

I was dreading looking at that picture after reading these reactions but it's not bad!!!! Or maybe I worked in acute psych wards for too long!!!!

Thanks for letting us know about the test. I have been having a whitish, yellowish tongue off and on as well. I am also coughing up curd like white/yellowish lumps which apparently is another sign. I only have it on my tongue for a day and then it goes. I am going to try the test... thanks! (then throw away the glass!)

I am also wondering - when a GI does an endoscopy, is it routine for them to check for candida? I heard it can cause all sorts of GI problems. I know they check for H. poloryi, celiac and something else which I was neg for.
Thanks everyone.. and Brad, hope you were finally able to get it under control!

I also think I have a yeast problem. I get a lot of thick white stuff along my gum line and on my teeth, which I have to floss out. Does that sound like it could be yeast? I also have a LOT of cloudy white stuff that follows urination. I am guessing this is probably yeast too? Anyone know?

I am very curious...what is the link between yeast and Crohn's? Can anyone offer up some info?

I looked it up and there is a connection b/c anyone with a compromised immune disorder are susceptible. If you are on steroids, it will make the flora flourish even more b/c the steroids are suppressing your immune system which fight off candida or other yeasts. I had the white film along my gum line as well. I don't know about the cloudy urine but probably. Google candida.

I would say they are definitely connected also. I've had a lot of problems with yeast overgrowth and what has worked best for me is a combination attack: eating plain yogurt, fresh garlic, avoiding sugar, drinking tons of water, and probiotics.

One item to note is that "Thrush" Candida infections are mainly in your mouth and are linked to weakened immune system, versus "Candidiosis" which attacks female areas. :)

Some tips on traditional and alternative therapies as well as prevention for both kinds: http://www.essortment.com/all/howtocureaye_rizp.htm

Thanks for the link, Melinda! :) I haven't experienced any type of yeast infection before, but good to know I'm already doing some of the preventive measures!

Brad - I hope you get things figured out soon. That must be a pain to deal with!

Unfortunately my problems weren't yeast related at all but a growing flareup thats to the point now I'm off work and looking at surgery to correct. Oh well :(
