ok, I had a flex-sigmoidoscopy done last week. the found an ulcer and they took a biopsy. the results came back that it was ulerative colitis. is that the same as the crohn's i have or is it a different disease. and is it curable?

There are two types of Inflammatory bowel Disease, IBD. One is Crohns Disease and the other is Ulcerative Colitis. CD can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth the anus. UC is confined to the large bowel. Unfortunately it is the same as Crohns in that it's treatable but not curable.

Hey Cory.

I posted this in another thread, but if you follow the links in this post, you will find two fairly good articles on the differences between UC and Crohns: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?p=203841#post203841 .

Unfortunately, neither can be cured, but some people have way better luck treating UC than CD... I guess with anything else it is different in each person.

Sending warm thoughts.....

Hi Cory - Glad you finally have a firm diagnosis. I am shocked that your doctor hasn't explained to you what UC is and how to deal with it! I suggest to call the doctor's office and ask for some information.

The "nice" thing about UC is that you can have your colon removed which essentially removes the disease. Many people live very comfortably with a j-pouch after having their colon removed. You can check out jpouch.org for info on this procedure. I have had one for 8 years and until recently when I was re-DX with Crohn's, it was GREAT!

Good luck - I hope you are feeling better - Amy
