Sorry it took me so long to post back. My surgery was on the 7th. The day of surgery was w
One of the roughest days of my life. Then after that it slowly got better. Then Thursday night came and I started throwing up pretty bad. The nurse said it was something from my stomach. The pain isnt that bad anymore I'm having a little discomfort when I lay a certain way. But my question is the nausea normal after surgery? Because it was really bad last night and still is bad?

welcome back mate,

Glad to hear you are doing ok, after my surgery I was throwing up a fair bit too. I managed to pull out my NG tube in the night and there wasnt a trained doc or nurse available to put it back in.

When you have any bowel surgery the whole bowel tends to go into shutdown as it doesnt like being messed around with. This can take a while to start working again, in the meantime, you tend to back up on bile or vommit (if you are eating) and it has nowhere to go but up.

Im surprised you havent got an NG tube in place, speak to your doc if your are still in hospital and ask wether its an option.

Hi Brad,

Hope you're ok. I can sympathise with the sickness/nausea. I had an ileocecal resection on 11th dec, but as mine was done late afternoon and into evening the effects of my epidural and anaesthesia didn't wear off until the day after. That night after was horrific, I had been given OxyContin for the pain so I'm not sure if my body didn't take to that or it was something else, but I was vomiting all night long, I was in absolute agony and my 5 wounds were throbbing. I had no sleep and when I wasn't vomiting I just felt sick. I was begging the nurses to stop the pain and vomiting. I stopped the OxyContin and tried my best the following day to sip water and was advised to stay off foods that day, as if it carried on i'd been told I'd need an ng tube. I survived on paracetamols and ibuprofen for the pain and also took anti-sickness and anti-spasmatic tablets after that horrific night and luckily I didn't vomit again and the nausea eased off.

So could it be a morphine based med that your body is not agreeing with? Have they given you any anti-sickness and anti-spasmatic tablets?

Really hope it stops soon because I honestly know how it feels.

Yvette :)

Thanks everyone for the feed back. I started vomiting pretty bad today. Its green and has bitter taste that I can say I never had vomit taste like before. I can't hold anything down now. I have no idea what to do. I just don't want to go back in the hospital I had enough stays lol

Hey mate, yep that bile sure tastes like crap! And the bright green colour, yuck it brings back memories. So did you get an ileostomy? I imagine if you did the output would be much the same colour. If it carries on, speak to your consultant. An ng tube would make it a whole lot easier to deal with and it doesn't necessarily mean going back to hospital.
Hang in there!

It wasn't a ileostomy. I can't spell it lol. The surgeon took out my ileum and small piece of my colon and reconected everything so I have no bag. I actually got readmitted due to the vomiting and pain. And I was also very dehydrated. But getting back to normal now. I honestly just can't wait to sit down and eat a plate of food I've been dealing with this flare for 4 months now and haven't really ate sense. Also I will never look at chicken broth and jello again after this lol

Lots of things can cause nausea and vomiting after surgery. As well as the surgery itself messing with your intestines, the anaesthetic can leave you feeling sick, and some painkillers that you may be on after surgery can have that effect as well, especially morphine.

Are you home yet or back in hospital again?

I hope your recovery goes smoothly and that you'll be able to eat again pretty soon. It's often best to stick to soft foods for a few weeks after surgery while things heal (unless another diet has been recommended to you by your doctors), but if all goes well you should be able to broaden your diet a bit after that.

I just had the lower third of my small intestine resected and have issues with nausea as well. My surgery was the 28th of December. The nausea intensity is ebbing finally. I do have to take anti nausea meds. I found the surgery and recovery difficult with complications.
