Hi Ya'll.....

I don't know if this is the right thread to post this, so if it's not then feel free to move it.

I knew I was gonna be admitted since Tues, but I got the call today around 6pm that my room was ready at UNC. I got here and am now in my room. The Dr who is from La, like me we got to talking and she was very nice. The RN's seem to be nice too - of course all is quiet b/c it's 11:46pm.

The plan is for the PICC team to come tomorrow and place a PICC line in me so they can give me IV antibiotics, and other meds and TPN. For now I am taking my usual meds by mouth. I'm such a hard, hard, extremely hard stick and all my veins are shot, and blow and are so tiny and weak. If the PICC team can't get it then I have to go down to VIR and they will do another procedure. I dred those and get anxiety attacks so luckily the admittind Dr listented to me and told me she'd give me anything I needed or wanted to calm my nerves, for pain, etc.

So for now I wait - they did come and get blood, and since I've been a 'regular' at this hospital many, many times alot of the RN's and Lab Team all remember me - even the transporter who brought me to my room remembered me and she was like, "You're back girl!" ha.

I know this Dr. told me that the Infectious Disease team will see me tomorrow b/c of the absess and infection, along with my Surgeon and my GI dr will come too.

Thanks for reading this and I just ask y'all to pray for me and that they find a vein and that procedure goes well. Also that I get all the nutrition I need and that I at least gain some weight while I am here.

So glad again I found this board. Feel free to add me as a friend on FB, just le tme know you are on this board so I will not ignore you.

I'll keep ya'll posted too on what I find out. Have a good night/day depending on where you are!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers Dsnygrl as I can truly relate to abscesses, IV antibiotics, and very bad veins. I just had my surgery,4th or 5th one, can't remember as I've been under the knife so many times, in October 2009 due to a hernia that was tangled up in my small intestines causing me intense pain along with 3 strictures that were causing partial obstructions for several yrs. My old surgeon did a half @ss job back in 2008 plus he never did a CT scan to catch the hernia or the strictures to figure out what was causing the chronic pain. On top of that, he had a lousy bed side manner and his secretary was very rude and nasty half the time whenever I had to call him. She's very old, I'd say in her 70's, no kidding!!, and I always dreaded calling her for anything as I didn't need the extra stress when I felt lousy.

So I fired his butt & luckily the surgeon I saw back in 2000 agreed to take me on as his pt. because he had records on me. He did the CT scan, found the problem, and did an awesome job at fixing the problem. I love his staff as well b/c they are friendly & understanding whenever I had serious problems.

I'll say an extra prayer for your doctors as well. BTW, I'm on Lovenox as well due to a genetic clotting disorder. Best of luck to you and know that you are not alone in this. I wish you a life long remission and good veins from one crohnie to another.

:hug::hug:

Hi, Monica: Would be glad to pray. Take good care and please keep us posted. Try to have a good sleep tonight, too!

THanks for replying. What gets me is that I had been home for at least 3 weeks maybe 4 from the hospital and the absess formed in the middle of the night. So what causes these to form? Did the Dr/Surgeon do something wrong in surgery?

The admitting Dr tonight told me that there is fluid built up near like on top of the stoma area and it's swollen, and they aren't sure how to get rid of that. I told her I do not want to get another drain inserted in me. that was not a nice experience and they had to drug me up in order for it to be inserted. I'm just really nervous about what their plans are for me while I am here.

Im sorry you had a bad experience with your surgeon. The first one they sent me to back in FEb was from the minute I saw him, was RUDE, RUDE and didn't smile, was just a jerk. So I requested another one, who I had heard had great bedside manners, and I love him now. He's the one who did my surgery in May, but am wondering now what went wrong that caused this absess?

Thanks so much for your kind and ecouraging words to me. I know everyone on here is a great support. I'm sure I will get lonely in the hospital at times and UNC is so hard to get in/out of that I don't get many visitors. :(

Thanks Kelly! I appreciate your prayers!! They just gave me my sleeping pill, and a pain pill b/c I am experiencing bad pains from the absess...so I am sleepy now. I'm off to the 2cd star to the right.....and straight on til morning!!! :)

BTW, how do you put little icons inside a message - like Kelly did?

Hiya

I wish you well and that they do find a vein. When you go to reply click on the post reply button and not quick reply then you will see faces on the right. If you want to see the whole collection then click on the 'more' and they will open up in another window. Have fun with the smilies - I really like them they keep me amused.

Thinking of you :hang:

Hey Monica,

AND GOOD LUCK WITH ANY TESTS AND PROCEDURES!

:goodluck::goodluck::goodluck:

Thinking about you Monica,

Hi again Monica!! Peter Pan? You really do love Disney don't you? I hope you are sound asleep right now as I should be. I also hope everything goes well for you today. Good luck:).

Hope all goes well for you!.....as far as the abcess, those can 'happen' - remember surgery is an invasive thing, and bodies react differently - there could be something just waiting to happen in there and the surgery drops your immune system even more and allows it to thrive.....

Good luck, hope you got a good nights' sleep!

Hi Monica! I hope you slept well and they're giving you lots of good drugs! Wishing you all the best - hang in there.

Update

So UPDATE!

My Surgeon came in today and told me that he wants to move me to his floor on the surgical floor, rather than keep me up here in the Medicine floor. I've been told I am the youngest patient on this floor. Anyhow, so the surgeon put me on a liquid diet - so I sit here and type to ya'l will green jello and Lemon Italian Ice. I don't eat the Chicken Broth.

So then my GI Dr comes in and says that he spoke to my surgeon and he's letting him take the lead in all this and that he's stepping back for a while. The plan is for them to get a Central Line in me sometime today/tomorrow so I can get TPN and antibiotics via IV. I've got fluid built up near the absess that needs to be drained somehow or they are trying to treat it with medicine. I am not happy about going to a liquid diet....b/c part of my stomahch is growling! Argh!

I"m not too happy about moving b/c I am afraid to get a semi-private room. I told both Drs I requested a private room due to my ostomy and I need a private room - most of the time I get a private one, but if I dont i will continue to ask.

So they just put in the Central line in my neck - all went well. It hurts and is sore from the poking all over me. But it's over with now and now I'm waiting for the TPN and antibiotics, and to be moved to a better floor.

Til then I hang out here on the 8th floor eating my Italian ice and surfing thew web. I know all the RN's on 4 Anderson will remember me and I hope to get the ones i liked and clicked with before.

Sorry for rambling.....but thanks for readint

thinking of you Monica! hospital is no fun! hope you can get some rest hun!
good luck and keep us updated
xxxx

Ugg. I was in the hospital so many times after my surgery in April. It is never fun to be on a liquid diet and get stuck with a roomy when you have an ostomy. Good luck! We are all thinking of you.

So today is day #2 in the hospital. I was moved to the floor I was on after my surgery in May, and all the RN's remember me and said most of their patients wind up back once they leave for some reason or another.
I will say since I've had the TPN for almost 24 hours I feel like a ball of energy! I walked around the RN's station so many times today! I had strength to do so!!! YAY me!
My Surgeon came in today, which surprised me *He was on call* and said I asked him, "Can I eat something tomorrow? my stomach's growling?" He laughed, and said most likely i can start a small diet tomorrow. I'm so sick of liquids! I am tired of green jello, I do NOT eat chicken broth either. So I eat the Italian ice.

Im not sure how long I will be here, but I hope for several more days so I can get built back up and feeling stronger. Oh, just now one of the Residents came in here - its 9pm at night - ha - and he wanted to check on me. I told him I had been walking laps around and he was impressed and could see a difference in me already. So that's encouraging.

Just wanted to keep y'all posted. I have to get used to posting on this board b/c I am more used to posting on Facebook than here. Thanks everyone fro reading and for the well wishes. This sure is a great GREAT group of people that I've met!!!

Monica I'm glad to hear your feeling a little better. I said a prayer for you and for your doctors to quickly find the best treatment and get you well. Hang in there!

Hey Monica,
Sorry you are going through a rough time! I hope you managed to get a private room and the central line is feeling a little better. Hopefully by now you received something to eat so you can quiet your growling. I know the feeling and its not comfortable! I know..I know... you dont like the chicken broth :D
Anyhow, thinking of you and I hope you are doing laps around the nursing station again. Maybe you can start racing other patients or nurses for meds... hehe...just kidding :D
Hang in there... and let us know how things are going.
Wendy

WEndy, I did manage to get a private room. A HUGE room for that matter. I am in a quiet area, away from the RN's station and possibly tomorrow my surgeon said I could start eating something. I admit, I snuck a cracker here adn there b/c I was so hungry. *Shame shame* on me, but oh well. I'm not having any testing done - if that were the case I'd not have snuck a cracker.

The central line is feeling better. The lab came in at 8am wanting blood, and I said you can't stick me in my arm I've got a central line. So, the RN came in and said, that I was right to have told her not to stick me, so the RN got my blood from the central line. There is no way I'm being stuck again! No way, Jose

I am however, annoyed with the Nurse's Assistant. Everyone else knows me here on this floor, even the night time RN's when I went walking around. So when she came in to take my BP/Temp she said, "Well, I don't remember you nor know you" I said, "Well I dont remember you either" but it's 'HOW' she said it that bothered me. Ugh! The joys of being in a hospital - maybe she is having a bad day or something? IDK?

Well, I'm signing off for the night. My nightly meds are almost due and then I'll be off to never neverland! LOL Talk to you all soon!!

I just found this post. I'm glad you are getting the help you need. Keep us posted and :goodluck:

Aww I hope things start picking up for you, keep us updated! Disney movies ALWAYS used to make me smile when I was really ill in hospital :)

I just found this post too! Glad you are keeping us more up-to-date on here :)

Your experience with the abscess and having a drain put in sounds SO much like what I went through before I got my diagnosis. They had to drug me up to put the drain in and I still remembering it hurting and was sore for a while after that! I also cannot eat the broth. It makes me gag! Haha. I sucked on a lot of hard candy too :) Lifesavers were my favorite ;)

Glad you're on a floor where MOST of the people know you. I remember having a NA come in at night to draw blood. it was a male assistant and he never introduced himself to me or even spoke to me. I remeber telling my mom that I thought he was rude. And then she told me later that morning he saw her in the hallway and started a conversation with her. Ha... Some people are just socially awkward, I guess. Haha.

It's good to hear you are up and walking around. I always felt silly walking around the surgical floor by myself in my hospital gown, so I did laps in my room!

Hopefully the antibiotics will heal most of the abscess, so if they do have to drain it, it will heal fully within several days!

Glad you are feeling better, Monica, and hope you have some real food soon and it treats you well!

Best wishes for continued improvement! - Amy

Oh, Monica, if I was in NC right now, I would come and visit you. Unfortunately, I am visiting my family in IN right now. Get better soon!

Hello Monica
How are you keeping today.?
I'm waiting to go into hospital for a small bowel resection on 20th August.
Its not the usual hospital i go to when i've got a bad flare up, they know me very well there !!! ... i'm sure they say " oh no Marie's back.. and she's got horrible veins !!".. mine too, have had so much beatings over the last few years, and being on Methorexate i have to have bloods done every month...

I hope you have managed to eat a little bit today, i know the feeling of wanting to eat after being on TPN.. but i was so scared it was going to make me throw up!! and double up in pain....BUT..High doses of steriods I.V as well as oral, have made me... does that happen to you too??

Good luck to you my new friend
Take care

Hey Monica :)

Just wondering how you are getting on. Are you still in hospital?

Sending warm thoughts.....

Update on Monica's UNC stay. I'm home and need help!!

I went home from the hospital on Monday. I am doing much better and the Dr.s thought I'd have to come home with IV treatments with TPN. But I wound up doing a lot better and my eating improved and so they let me go home.

In the meantime, while I was in the hospital I was fired from my job. My company told me to get a letter from my Dr letting them know I was still out and under his care and that i was in the hospital. Well, my boss is out on maternity leave, but there is another guy who is in charge, and I got a letter via email from him stating that my being out is causing complications at the company and as of now I am no longer employed there. My company told me that if I got a letter from my Dr they would extend my FMLA and grant me the time off, but this jerk decided to not allow me to come back. I am at the point right now of just going off on him. How dare him do this to me while I am in the hospital. I was planning on quitting anyways, but I was gonna tell them later but they went ahead and just told me I am fired.

I am sorry that I have been MIA for a while on the boards. All this going on has gotten me so mad, and I dont know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I dont know what now to do bc I will need insurance and I need to get my supplies for the ostomy. I feel like crying, punching a hole in the wall b/c im so mad at my Company. UGH!!

Wow, what a jerk! That totally sucks! I cannot imagine having to deal with that situation. I can understand why you've been away from the boards and stressed out. I wish I had some sort of advice to give, but as you know still trying to work on being employed myself! Haha.

I hope others can be more helpful than me. All I can offer is hugs and empathy! Glad you are feeling physically better though! :)

Thanks Marisa. I am just so upset at all this mess!! Firing me while I am in the hospital sick like I've been?!?! They have NO heart at this place. I'm trying to find out if there is something I can do on how they handled this.

They told me to get a Dr note, I did...and if i did they'd extend my leave..so i did that and now I get fired?!?!? Yeah Jerk is putting it nicely! Haha!

at least I won't have the stress of working there anymore, and plus I was gonna quit anyhow - but I am just more upset at how and the way he wrote the letter. Ticks me off.

Yeah...that just sounds cold, heartless, and unprofessional. He could have had at least the balls to phone you and tell you. But, he knew that it was terrible. Hopefully your Dr.'s note will at least get your benefits extended!

No, unfortunately ALL my benefits were cut off the minute they decided to fire me. So, I have NOTHING now and will have to pay for medicines out of pocket now.

I don't think they can fire you like that. You may not want to work there but you need to protect your rights to unemployment and the chance to purchase cobra insurance. Start googling the laws in your state on employment, you could hire an attorney but if you can get educated on your rights you may be able to avoid that, Good luck! I'm glad you are at least feeling better!

Yeah, I was referring to the COBRA benefits as well! Even if you don't work there, you should be able to enroll in COBRA until you either get another job or different insurance. Not sure if being fired means you become ineligible for enrolling in COBRA, but if so another major reason to fight back!

Cobra seems to be so expensive though. I dont have money to even get Cobra that's the problem....
Im doing research on what I can do and what my rights are, but I'm getting frustrated not knowing where to begin...UGH!

Yeah...I do understand. I have heard from some people it can be expensive. I would agree with CS, though about possibly hiring an attorney or finding someone to consult with you about it. I agree though...you have enough to deal with just recovering from surgery and being in the hospital!

My first thought at reading this, was just what CS said. I would look at finding a lawyer, or at least consulting with one. Perhaps a letter from a lawyer to the company would be enough to know that they could be in trouble and may be able to at least get your benefits/FMLA back in order.
