Good morning group,
This is our first post as we've recently found out Jack(7 years old)has Crohn's. He's been on prednisone for 6-weeks and 6mp for three ( have not started tapering off prednisone yet). His sister had a cold and seems that he caught it but has had high fevers for a week (104 this morning after 7-days of having fevers ranging from 99-103). Since this is his first time being sick while being on prednisone and 6mp...we're unsure what to do...is this just his body taking extra time to fight off a common cold, is the prednisone just masking something else?? Just seems that 7-days and not getting better is too much for a small cold. We took him to Children's Hospital two three days ago and the blood work looked ok...do we just keep taking him back? Something just doesn't seem right.

Sorry to hear that your little guy is unwell. I suggest you do what seems right to you, your intuition with your children is usually bang on. My D's 13, developed fevers in the evening only during this flare up and I was advised by our go that this can happen with chronic illness. Good luck
 
Hi and welcome to the group!

You are right, things take a little longer to clear up when on immune suppressing treatments. Probably just what his sister had and viral (since nothing showed in blood work) but our GI gave us instructions to follow up with pediatrician for fevers over 101 so I would give your ped a call and have him looked at again especially since the fever persists and is actually getting higher.

Hi there and welcome! 7 days of fevers and now 104 is NOT him fighting off a cold. I would take him back to the hospital and make sure they consult with a GI while you're there. Always trust your instinct:

In my opinion, 104 after 7 days of fevers while on those medications for Crohn's disease warrants further investigation.

My heart goes out to you and your family, this must be so tough :(
 
Thanks for the responses! We're at Children's now and they've given him a stomach X-ray and are now giving him fluids. It's likely they will keep him over night for observations.

I'm glad you went in! When you say a stomach x-ray, do you by chance mean a CT scan or maybe even an MRI? Did they have him drink anything?

Has he by chance been on antibiotics in the last month or so?
 
Also glad you went in AND they are doing something this time. Which hospital are you at? Boston? If so they supposedly have one of the premier Pediatric IBD programs so you are in good hands!

No, they just took an X-ray and didn't see anything. They admitted him and essentially said that the blood work came back fine, urine was fine and now they are going to send a stool sample out to rule our c-diff. If all that is negative and he still has fevers they said they would think that the prednisone isn't working and they would switch to remicaid. They are also starting him on an antibiotic now to be safe...I think they called "flaxil".

The antibiotic is probably flagyl.

I'm kinda curious what they were looking for with the xray, did they say?

I hope he feels better soon!
 
Yes, they were looking for an abcess and later in the evening did a CAT scan to determine that there there was none. They have sent a stool sample out to see if he has c-diff and if so...antibiotics should kill that. If not, they will likely tinker with his medications as the fevers are likely a result of the prednisone not working correctly.

Anything you think we should be thinking about or asking?
 
Sorry no experience with fevers but sounds like you are in good hands. I hope you get answers real soon!
 
Abscesses and c.diff were my two primary concerns. I'm glad they checked for abscesses with a CT. I agree with the others, it sounds like you're in good hands :)

Pretty much the same...we're waiting to start the Remicaid(should be within the hour).

Thanks everyone! Turns out it was Jack's first Crohn's flare. He already seems like a new kid after his first dose of remicade. We're headed home the hospital now... With Jack!! Everyone's support was so helpful for us. Thank you!!

Fantasic, glad to hear Remi is working it's magic!

Hopefully, all will settle down from here.

No doubt you will also be feeling exhausted. I think sometimes adrenaline gets us parents through while our kids are really sick, and then we flake out aftewards. So, take care of yourself too.
