So I just took my 1st 50mg of imuran, fingers crossed in 2 months time I'll be in remission. I have been on pred for almost 5 months now. Currently tapering from 20mg... I asked GI about MAP he said that young people don't usually get it, he said its more those with weaker/compromised immune systems... He also said that MAP causes something similar to Crohn's but it is not Crohn's? Man I am so confused... Anyway, fingers crossed for me peeps. I'm hoping I tolerate imuran very well and it is my wonder drug. (alongside MM that's already my wonder drug).

Imuran is my wonder drug :) I was struggling on for a year on pred and went onto Imuran and it has changed my life for the better :) im in remission and have been for a whole year now! ( apart from one small flare/hospital trip this Jan) taking 150mg and I have next to no symptoms of crohns sometimes I even forget i have the disease!

Hope Imuran is as much of a success story for you as if has been for me :)

Good luck! Imuran (or Azathioprine) has been good for me symptom wise but unfortunately I have never been able to have high enough doses to keep me in remission for long, because I am TPMT deficient. Hope it works well for you :)

Imuran was part of a combination with remicade that did the trick for me after 25 years. Fingers crossed it works for you too.

Imuran has been fine for me so far, 6 months in. I have mini-flares (24 hrs) when I stray from my mostly low-residue bland-ish diet but other than that I feel like a normal person most days! Good luck

Been on Imuran since 1991 and it's kept things under control (with the occasional flare) since then

I've been on azathioprine for 2 years now. It was a compromise with my doctor. He wanted to put me on steriods but as I'd seen they had no effect (apart from bad side effects) on my sister I said no. So this was my last ditch before steroid city. My part of the bargain was to eat healthily and look after myself more. I had a rocky time when I started the pills but now they've settled down and I'm in remission. I'm not too good at the moment but I put that down to eating rubbish at Christmas! I'm hoping it will settle down in a few weeks.

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

I did well on Imuran in the past. I am now seeing a different gastro doctor and he is prescribing my 6mp, which is very similar to Imuran. I am doing very well on 6mp.

I am hoping to start this soon (well when they get my blood tests back and give me the all clear). Reading this is all really promising! I was starting to feel a bit down after going back on to steroids today but maybe there is some hope:)

Iv been on it about 9 days now, and weird thing is I Havnt had any bloOd since startIng, I know imuran is supposed to take 8 weeks to work but I'm feeling good about it :)

Perhaps the placebo effect of simply trying a new drug has had an immediate effect on you? Or maybe like LDN it has a very immediate effect for a week as your body takes it on board?

I think it's probably a combination of things working, pentasa is around the 8 week mark now so that's finally working, plus glutathione, plus the weed, plus eating very healthy, things are looking up! Hopefully in 2 months im feeling even better!

Hi Joshua, have you had any side effects from the imuran? I'm due to be starting it soon and a bit worried about nausea/flu like side effects.

Glad you're doing so well :)

Hey, no side effects what so ever, I get my bloodwork back today I'll let you know if anything strange came up

That's how I've been. Been on Pred for the last 9 months now (last day is tomorrow!) and the Azathioprine seems to be working. Anything that keeps the disease in check without the need to also take Prednisone is perfect!

Hobbes, what symptoms do you show w Crohn's once you've had surgery? Sorry for my ignorance, I.e do you still get pains? Noticed you said you had Crohn's in the stoma, I didn't know that was possible

Good Luck on the Imuran Joshua, I have been on it myself now for almost a month, just this week I have been feeling a little better. I am hopeful! Also waiting for insurance to approve Humira. My GI thinks the combo of the 2 will work well. Wishing you speedy recovery!

Crohns can go anywhere from the mouth to the anus. My Crohns is just inside my stoma. I was having a small bowel obstruction in May 2012. My blood tests indicated higher levels of sed rate and CRP. A scope was ultimately used to look inside my stoma and that's when Crohns was confirmed. I haven't had abdominal pain in a while now, and all my blood work shows sed rate rate and CRP back to the normal range. I never did see any blood in my output even though I was anemic for a bit- not so now. Hoping the Imuran keeps things in check once I'm completely off the Pred.

I started on 50mg of Aza on 1 feb and on 20 feb had to stop taking it due to horrendous side effects. The first 2 weeks were a breeze. In week 3 started getting bad nausea, joint pains, extreme tiredness and headaches. 4 days ago about 3 hours after taking the tablet I would start to get a really stiff neck which spread up to my jaw, cheek and then the top of my head. Yesterday morning ended up in A&E as I had not slept for 3 days and the pain in my neck and head was the worst I have ever had. After speaking to my IBD nurse we agreed to stop the Aza. I really wanted to give this drug a chance but it seems that all the meds I have been prescribed so far for my CD I have bad reactions to (Pentasa, Asacol and Aza).

I would still suggest that anyone should try this drug as it does appear to work for a lot of people - just not for me!

Hi, sorry to hear you weren't doing well on it, did you do your tmpt test? Iv been on it for about 3 weeks now, yesterday had a splitting headache but I think it's from stress, today the headaches a bit better

Hi Joshua
Yes, they did the TMPT test beforehand and that was fine. Also the two sets of weekly bloods that I have had so far have also been fine - so in theory, it should have worked for me.
Also found out today that there are some viruses out there that cause similar symptoms.
However, after two days of not taking Aza - all my side effects have gone instantly and I have finally been able to get some sleep.
I think I may try 6MP as it can work for 60% of people that can't tolerate Aza. I am due to see my GI in 10 days to agree the next way forward.
To think initially I didn't want to take Aza because I have a phobia of vomiting and that wasn't a side effect for me but can be for others.
Hey ho and on we go!

My bloodwork came back all good, :) liver enzymes in healthy range, Crp back down to normal

Josh
Glad to see that it appears to be working for you - you have lasted on it longer than I could. Found out yesterday that my liver enzymes are very raised but they are hoping that they will return to normal levels in a few weeks once the Aza is out of my system.
Hope it all continues to work out for you. 😃
