Any comments most welcome!

Thanks in advance, :)

Might I recommend you consider getting a Nook (Barns and Noble) e-reader. It can be rooted and have the android tablet OS installed on it. Basically, with a little tech no-how you can get the equivalent of an iPad which can then have the kindle app for android installed on it.

If you aren't tech-savvy enough (there are guides online you could read through when you go to make your decision if it is within your skill) then the Kindle will be easier on your eyes for reading because it is e-ink and stresses your eyes less, but you need an attachment light to read in the dark.

The iPad is nice since it can have multiple eBook platforms including the kindle app installed on it, giving you the most options for reading. The downside is that it is backlit (as would the nook be) and that means you would have the eye stress. Overall the eye stress isn't too bad, but just something to consider. It is nice having the backlight for reading in the dark, and the iPad is more functional, but more expensive as well.

hope that helps point out the pros and cons of each. If you just want to read, go with the kindle. If you want a tablet for other features, the iPad is a great choice, or you can go with a Nook if you are willing to put a bit of effort into rooting it.

I put my vote in for the Kobo e-reader.

First of all the iPad is a nice "gotta have it toy" but the glossy screen makes it unusable a lot of situations.

The Kindle great for reading, however the e-ink screen is currently on so many devices that it is a moot point. My main issue with the Kindle is that when you purchase a book you don't actually buy the book, what you are buying is a license to read the book, which can be revoked at any time. In addition Amazon is big, but what happens to the books that you purchase should they decide to stop selling and supporting the e-book format. You are left with a bunch of files in a proprietary format that are basically unusable.

With the Kobo reader you are actually purchasing the book, you can get it in multiple formats in which you can choose some or all of them. If you so desire you could even print the book with your printer and physically read it. You can use their reader, you can down load the app for your cell phone (or iPod touch) to read it there, you can read it on your computer. If you so desire and you go ahead with the iPad you can download the Kobo app for that.

Of the two I say iPad, if you go with the iPad don't use the Kindle app, use Kobo (or if you must use iBooks), but anything but Kindle.

If I can throw in my opinion go with the Kobo reader, it is straight and to the point. And I know for a fact that the Kobo is available in Australia.

*full disclosure, I work for the company that owns the majority stake in Kobo,

Scott and my father both use an I-Touch. They seem to like them. For me, I'd probably go with the easiest screen to read.

I have a Nook Color, I got it for Christmas. I love it! The only thing I am having trouble with is the downloads from our public library, I have to spend some time on figuring that one out. I can get them onto my computer but can't get them onto my Nook. It uses wi-fi for downloading.
I am sure if I have a free afternoon I will get it squared away.

I have a Kindle and I *hangs head in shame* absolutely love it. I actually have a real problem with:
you don't actually buy the book, what you are buying is a license to read the book
But as it is right now the Kindle has the most selection of the E-readers I researched. The more expensive version comes with free 3G (you can browse the internet with it), which I think pays for the device itself after a little over a year. It's perfect for when you're stuck in the bathroom for long stretches.

I think it depends on what you want to use it for, if you want to read a lot I suggest the nook or kindle because the screen is a lot better for outdoor reading, but if you want it for other things I LOVE my ipad! THere is an app for everything

Hi Guys,

Oops, this slipped by me! :eek2:

Thanks for the feedback, it is very much appreciated!

Dusty. :)

I got a Kindle for Christmas, and I quite literally rarely leave home without it. It fits perfectly into my handbag, so it's easy to carry around.

Amazon's UK website has a good selection of free books, and they often have good deals where you can download a book for free for a short period of time, before they start charging for it. I guess it's a way to give some from publicity to the authors.

In terms of usability, it's quite easy to use, and I find the screen is great for reading. You can browse for and download books directly from the device, or you can search Amazon's site directly and click to have either samples or full books sent to your device once the wireless is on.

In the end, I guess it depends whether you are looking for a mostly reading device (you can browse the net on the Kindle, but it's not great), or if you want to have something a bit more powerful.
