Hi,

I was looking for some food suplements as I'm pretty much physically active (mostly gym).
I'm 182 cm high and have 69 kg (152 lbs). I know it's not too bad, but the BMI is on the lower boundary.
Currently I'm on Imuran (azathioprine) 125mg and Salofalk (Mesalazine) 2g, and my Crohn is pretty much under control (occasionaly have flare-ups). I'm not following any specific diet, but I'm trying to eat as much protein as I can (mostly poultry) and staying away from junk food of any kind.

Some folks told me about L-glutamine and whey protein so I made a little bit of research on the web, but have found a lot of conflicting information.
What is your experience with those suplements?
Do you recommend one manufacturer over another?

Do I actually need any of those suplements?
As you can see I'm pretty confused.

Grateful for any help

Haldir,

welcome to the forum. Protein, and glutamine are great additions to a proper fitness program. Glutamine has actually shown to be benificial to people with crohn's. However in working out, it helps by aiding in muscle recovery. You might notice that your muscle don't stay sore for as many days, when you are taking glutamine. Protein powder is in my opinion essential to an efficient workout program. I am busy writing a short article on diet & supplements as it pertains to fitness. Check back soon!

What type of whey protein?

I'm a 57 yeay old ectomorph. I've had crohn's 10 years and, although technically in remission, I'm losing a lot of weight. This is a very difficult time in my life, so I know that stress is a big factor.
Trying lots small meals: avacados, eggs mixed with apple-sauce, bananas, salmon, nut-butters... can't tolerate stuff like boost or ensure.

I've read very mixed comments about Whey Protein shakes. Are some more digestible than others? This has been going on for a year, now. I know it's just diarrhea but I really can't continue like this.

I miss my running regime!

L Glutamine on an empty stomach is very soothing to my intestines. Noticeably. To gain muscle you take it with food.

Never used whey protein.

L glutamine is an amino acid used directly in the repair of the intestinal tissue. Studies suggest it's most effective when combined with arginine.

It's also used to preserve muscle in a fast and some other things but they are all secondary and the majority of glutamine you consume will be used to repair the gut first and foremost, which is why it's awesome for Crohn's, not so much for fitness.

I'm still not convinced whey has any advantages over just eating chicken, especially considering all the additives, emulsifiers, flavorings etc. generally found in it.

I think it is a pretty important supplement given the positive effects it has on myself. I guess my question on it is why does my body need this supplement to begin with? Ideally, it should have its own source of amino acids to do the job.

I can get along fine without it, but it does improve things when I use it. Less bowel movements, less intestinal activity in general.

Always looking for the root of the problem. Maybe it's just because I am getting older. Nothing physical seems to ever improve with age.

I tried L-Glutamine a (longer) while ago and it did not do anything for me (which doesn't mean it can't have any positive effect at all, we are all different).

This has me wondering how additive-free factory-farmed chicken is!
