I am looking into starting the SCD diet and I understand that all fluid milk is illegal, but was wondering about lactose-free milk?

Is anyone on the SCD diet that includes lactose free milk? Or is it a no go?

Thanks

Well, on the SCD diet, you're supposed to make your own SCd yogurt, which is made with milk, although they recommend those who can't drink cows milk, should try. Asking the yogurt with goat's milk.

The fermentation process of making yogurt renders it 99% lactose free, however other than the yogurt, most of those on the SCd diet drink either almond, coconut, or hemp milk.

I would imagine you should also be able to drink plain kefir.

I am going to be making the SCD yoghurt, but thanks for the info on the almond, coconut and hemp milk! I will try those :)

You just need to be careful with dairy. We actually stayed away from all dairy at first (yogurt, cheese, etc) and gave E a high quality SCD safe acidophilus instead. E was doing great and when we introduced lactose free cheese and cow's milk kefir, he flared up some. He does better with no dairy whatsoever. I think www.pecanbread.com also recommends no dairy at first too.

I always made my own milk using just almonds and water in the blender which is super easy. It tastes way better than it sounds too lol. A big concern with the lactose free store bought milk is that it contains carageenan which is illegal on the SCD diet.

Ah ok, If it coud have ingredients that are illegal then I shall stay off it and stick to almond! Thanks :)

Just to note, as far as I'm aware even the store bought nut milks are illegal because they too contain the carageenan

In the uk Alpro make a carageenan free Almond milk which you can get from most large supermarkets.

I haven't found any of the non dairy milks to be ok. It seems all the ones i can find have all kinds of junk in them.

To make almond milk, you just soak a bunch o almonds in water until they turn milky. Then you drain and dry out the almonds, run them through a food processor or coffee grinder, and turn them into almond flour. 2 birds, 1 stone.

You know, when the SCD diet was originally developed, I don't believe anyone was producing lactose-free milk, so it's not really addressed in the original diet.

In the GAPS diet (an updated version of the original SCD diet) all diary products are avoided for the first 4 weeks, and the certain types of dairy are reintroduced, such as fermented dairy products (yogurt and kefir) along with organic butter, homemade and aged cheeses, but not any milk or milk substitutes.

The fermentation process of making kefir and yogurt renders it 99% lactose free, and contains beneficial probiotics, but you have to be careful, because some people are allergic or sensitive to the milk proteins.
