Ive recently had surgery and a temp ileostomy put it as i will later on be having a j pouch . I went to the toilet lastnight and strangely loose black stool came out of my bottom has this happened to anyone else ?

They forgot to warn me about that too! Yes, you may pass stool out the back passage for a brief amount of time after surgery. For one thing, you probably had some left in your bowel. You may also pass mucus periodically.

Yes! The first couple weeks I had 'bits' come out. :eek2:

The mucus poops were only occasional for me. But it is normal.

It doesn't always stop. I passed mucus/blood several times a day, till I had the proctectomy.

I assume you've had your colon removed if you are having a J-pouch. In that case, I would think it is mucus and dark blood. I agree with KazT.. it may not stop until your next surgery. Even if the dark blood stops, you will continue to have mucus.

I had bleeding off and on for the first couple of weeks. Mucus will always be there.

Sorry... I remember now. You DID have your colon removed. I guess yours is the 3-stage surgery or is your J-pouch already formed? Mine was a 2-stage surgery, only I never went back for the second surgery to get rid of the stoma.

How are you feeling otherwise? So good to hear from you!

Yes mucus pops are normal, though I rarely have them. Not sure why?
How are you coping with the ileostomy?

Yeah im having the 2 surgeries only i may keep my stoma for a while as this surgery is tough ! And i want my life back for a bit !

Cool! At this point, I would say that what you are seeing is indeed old blood and mucus. I freaked me out the first time because it looked like solid stool. After the initial time, whenever I did see blood, it was in small amounts and was easily identifiable. My surgeon said this is to be expected as everything is beginning to heal because the small intestine (which is now connected to your anus) bleeds easily and everything is raw this soon after surgery. If you continue to see dark stuff or large quantities of blood, definitely call your doctor.

Are you home already or still in the hospital?

i can certainly understand delaying the next surgery. They do put us thru the wringer don't they. Better to be as healthy and happy and motivated for the next surgery as you can be. Amazing how we get so used to our stomas that they are preferable to more surgery! :):):)

They never told me either! You think they might want to tell us!
