Most nights I'm waking up to a huge leak at about 4am. All the output collects at the top (is this pancaking?) fortunately my skin is not suffering too much but I want to get this sorted! I use one piece convex coloplast bags with half a ring and I wear a belt. Any advice would be appreciated

Is this new or been happening from the start? Personally i leaked in all my one pieces I have tried so I know in my case it has to be a two piece.

I recommend you put baby oil in your pouch after every empty. Shake it around and let it reach the top so it's slippery and won't pancake. I also use gelling packets like ilesorb from nu-hope because that turns the liquid into a gel and keeps it from getting out as easily. I swear by the gel sachets at night.

Hi Kat. Leaks are so frustrating...especially during the night. Do you have an ileostomy or colostomy. It sounds like your output is fairly formed and is separating you from the wafer. Am I understanding correctly? Have you talked to a stoma nurse?

I'm not sure I can offer any advice. My experience is with high watery output ileostomies.

I'm sure someone will be along who has experienced what you're going through.

Hope you can get it sorted out soon.

It's quite a new problem and I have an ileostomy but don't very often have watery output.ive never tried a two piece how did they stop your leaks nogutsnoglory I don't really understand the difference

I can't really explain why but somehow the 2 piece with the plastic tupperware helps to prevent leaks for me. Maybe it's a little taller and helps protect. I have no idea but it goes to show its worth trying everything to see what may help.

I'm willing to try anything I've just ordered a few samples so will wait and see, thank you for the advice :)

I just thought of something. Does your flange mold around the stoma? I use convatec convex wafers. It is made to mold around the stoma. I started getting a lot of leaks. Now I cut it to size and use Eakin seals around the stoma. No more leaks.

I too can't have good lasting results with the one-piece system. I feel like the one piece involves more stress on the flange part and that it somewhat pulls it away from my skin and allows the leaks. I've had numerous leaks day and night with the one-piece and relatively none with the two piece system. If your stomach and stoma site are fairly even, I would even suggest you to try the two-piece system once without any ring/paste/strip. I only use those when I have irritation and for me they can ironically cause leaks sometimes.

Have you tried using the same bag with no ring or paste? I use the convex one piece coloplast too but have found when I used a ring or paste in the past it caused leaks or I leaked more often anyway. My output can vary from thick and paste to thin and watery.

Unfortunately I leak without the ring aswell, just received a couple of 2 piece samples in the post today so will start trying them tomorrow :)

Just like nogutsnoglory I found that once I moved onto a 2 piece I never get leaks in the night anymore, If I do get any sort of leak it's because I haven't got up in the night to empty and have let it get to full with air to the point it's like a balloon, so it pulls away.

I use the coloplast sensura and can't speak highly enough about it. Literally changed my life, Feels a lot more secure.

I'm trying out a coloplast 2 piece click one at the mo.ive had it on for two days now which is a miracle!not sure whether to leave it another day that might be too optimistic!im definitely liking it so far :)

So I shouldn't really complain because this is the first time I've been able to keep a bag on for 2days....but I had a shower and the bag literally fell off!does anybody else who uses coloplast have this issue?and can I use those big smile shape things to stick round it?cant remember what they are called haha

When the appliance fell off was it because of a leak? Or did it just fall off

Do you find it gets itchy under the base plate?
It sound like you're skin may not like adhesive. When I have shin issues there are a couple things I do:

1. Use a flow vent puffer (prescription puffer used by people with asthma) and mist all the skin under the wafer. Dust with stoma powder and dab ( don't wipe) with skin prep. Apply wafer when dry.

2. You can use a coloplast skin barrier over your skin and apply the wafer over top. This barrier has zinc in it which is good. With this option it is important to leave room between the barrier and your stoma. Use paste or Eakin seal (or a similar product) around the stoma. Depending on the length of your stoma you may need to use a convex appliance. I always use a belt.

You may need to use option one and two together.

im using coloplast, assura, the same ones as i came out of the hosp with, im getting up to 7 days out of them they really stick, one thing i do when put a new one on is to shape my fingers around the hole in the sticky plate once its put on and press lightly for about 30 seconds, then press the rest down, i dont use any cleaning solvents just hot water and a gauze swab to clean the area

I'm on my 3rd ileostomy and was always plagues with nighttime leaks. - I tried everything and nothing ever worked.

This ileostomy is permanent so I was determined to fix the problem this time -y stoma nurse got me salts bags which were new out - they have a really flexible base and are extra sticky.

I also use dermaguard wipes which adds more stickiness and the. Use the coloplast elastic tape around the edges just for extra peace of mind.

No leaks since I started using them unless I leave emptying my bag to the last minute ( I have no sensation in my abdomen so can't "feel" the bag is full.

I would re come d them to anyone who has leaks.

Just reading, I use the wellend convex flair, but I I always use an Eakins seal( they stick great), use a cavilon 3M wipe (also sticky) and add cool plats brava strips (the smiley stickers) it works well for me. I was initially only using half a seal, but was always having blowouts. If my skin is bad, I lucked up with getting psoriasis under my flange, I use friars balsam, also known as Benz tincture or benzine tincture, to make the skin really sticky.

At the end of the day I still experiment with new products, but always seem to stick with what I trust.

Good luck with the samples.

I'm using the Salts soft convex bags but with convatec stomapaste to fill in my tummy gaps. I don't get it right every time but I will with practise. My problem is knowing when the bag is full so I can wake up to empty.

That's sometimes my problem too I like my sleep lots!in the early days I used to set an alarm about 3am to remind me but now I just try not to eat in the evening too much and I'm usually ok :)

I sometimes et my alarm too but my output after eating can last anything from 20 mins to about 8 hours and the bag can fill up in half an hour, so it's difficult to predict when to wake up.

Last night I slept deeply, woke up somehow twice to empty. When the alarm went off at 5:30 the bag was very full and wouldn't have lasted much longer without blowing. If the alarm hadn't gone it would have been very messy. Dodged a bullet this time.

Is your stoma quite new? My output was very high to begin with especially at night but its quietened down a lot now

I'm sure they will and for your sake I hope it does leaks at night are the worst in my opinion far more messy than day time leaks!good luck :)

I agree. I was emptying several times a night post-op, but now (almost a year later) I'm going the entire night without emptying.

I hope I'm not going to have this more than a few months, but have to conquer this overnight problem, not had a decent nights sleep since I left hospital.
