Less inflammation means... less poo?

Hi all! Grateful to have found this forum. A lot of the posts and discussions have been very helpful. I was diagnosed with Crohns a month ago, although looking back I suspect I've had symptoms for 8 years or so.

I am currently on 40mg of Pred, after having been in the hospital for 5 days with a painful but fortunately not complicated flare. I begin tapering off that next week (yay). I began Azathioprine last week (first blood draw this Friday), and expect to start Humira or Remicade next week (dr checking with insurance).

I am still having occasional discomfort or pain, but am "poo-ing" formed poos for the first time in... forever maybe. So, I perceive based on that that things are getting better. But I've always been a very regular 2-3x day pooper and now I am suddenly not. Like, once a day? Not straining to go, just aware I'm not going as often, or passing as much over the course of a day/ few days.

I was reading some other posts and people had indicated as the inflammation in the intestines decreases, our bodies actually digest food more slowly? Is that accurate? Could this explain my going less? Again, not really feeling constipated because I don't need to strain, and I am still going. But at some point I can't help but think there should be a higher quantity coming out. Or... is my body digesting better so it might produce less waste? Or is this sort of constilation and I should take milk of magnesia or miralax?

I realize this question is quite poo filled and specific. But I appreciate any insight! I am doing a lot of research but am just starting this journey. Thanks all!

Hi. I am sorry you have this disease but you have found a good place to come to. It sounds like you are doing better and I hope it continues.

short answer is yes to your questions.dont take anything to increase the amount of stools you have your body is adjusting correctly to your new medications it just needs time.

Hello, welcome to the forum

It sounds like your bowel movements are getting more normal, which is a good sign, it probably means you're digesting your food better. Digestion slows a little when there is less inflammation because the body can now absorb more. When you have a lot of inflammation, you cant process a lot of foods so your body just kicks them out, but when that inflammation dies down your body can absorb more and holds onto it longer.

I don't think you're getting constipated yet, but it is something to just keep an eye out for as some people do find that they go from one extreme to the other. If you start going less than once a day, it becomes painful to pass, you get stomach pain that isn't normal for you or you start to pass blood then you may need to discuss it with your doctor and just start a gentle stool softener.
