I am curious about how lifting weights will affect my ileostomy. I feel better than I ever have after having my surgery back in March. I went down to 7 stone and I am now nearly 10 stone :). But I have always been skinny and not had a lot of muscle. I was wondering if anyone with an ostomy is lifting weights and has any advice they can give me regarding it.

Hi.

I used to lift a lot. I herniated the stoma and required surgery but was smarter after that.

Find a good stoma support belt. You're now lifting with a hernia. I'd stick to more reps with light weight over heavey weight.

Have fun.

I'm too chicken to try it, but I have read articles of people who lift weights with a stoma. Like DJW said, find a good stoma support belt.

I wouldn't lift anything crazy but light fitness should be fine. Definitely invest in a good ostomy belt that prevents hernias. Work your way up slowly.

I had my surgery in June and like you have gained weight and able to hit the gym again, I started it off slow and steady, not over doing it, but now the difference is great! I was worried about starting any gym work that would focus on my abdominals but so far so good, for me starting small and building up has been fine.

Nice one!! Do you wear anything to prevent hernia's. I do lift some stuff at work and sometimes feel it pulling just don't wanna hurt myself

Nah I haven't worn anything, but haven't felt anything pulling. I guess abdominal work is more repetitive than the stress lifting weights puts on the stomach, just thinking out loud lol

I lift weights. I had surgery in August and I just make sure I'm careful. I started three weeks ago and went light. My surgeon told me as long as I don't feel any pain I'm fine to lift. So I do the 5x5 strong lift method. I've gained 4 pounds of muscle in three weeks and feel much better.

That's really good.. I think I am gonna give it a try and see how I get one just start small and work my way up..

That's good. I had to lift weights as my bone density is not where it should be and my docs wanted me to lift to get it back up. Just drop the weight if you feel any pain. I really enjoy the strong lifts method of lifting as you are never lifting your max and since you start with just a bar you learn the correct way to lift, without hurting yourself. Good luck!

Hiya! I have an ileostomy, I'm skinny as a stick (6 stone) and I work at a stables, so alrhough im not lifting weights, I am lifting water buckets, shoveling heavy horse poop, carrying around haybales etc etc, and I havnt heard my Ostomy complaining ;) and I havnt even got a belt!

Hope this helps :)
