My son got an abdominal MRI last week to see the small intestine and make sure there were no blockages. The Dr. called today to say they found lesions on his liver and need to do an ultra sound this Friday. Has anyone has any experience with this? Is it common?

Just when we thought we could relax a bit!!

Thanks,Tiffany

The same thing happened to me. I had a CT scan in the spring of 2010 and they found "lesions" on my liver. They sent me for an MRI of my liver to see what was going on. It turned out that I have 4 Focal Nodular Hyperplasias on my liver. It was explained to me that these are basically like benign tumors, they don't really cause any symptoms and nothing needs to be done with them. I was told they might surgically remove them if they grow too big - they said 8 cm or larger would be criteria for surgery, and my largest one is something like 2 or 3 cm. They don't cause me any pain nor symptoms and I wouldn't even know they were there if they hadn't done an abdominal CT.

So, long story short, if your son has the same things I have, you can relax. :) It's probably nothing. I hope Friday goes well, good luck and try not to worry too much (I know, easier said than done)!

Are his liver enzymes and functions ok on his blood work??

I am assuming normal. Last blood test was a week ago and they said everything was in normal range. But that was before the MRI and I am not sure what all they checked him for last time. I know it was for meds and inflamation but I dont know if the checked liver enzymes.

I had an ultrasound that detected a hemangioma on my liver. It had to be verified with a CT scan and it turned out there were five of them. The bigger one showed up on the u/s. turns out they are relatively harmless so long as they don't grow to be too large. From what I've read, they are normally congenital. So likely I was born with them and they grew when I was on the pill and during my pregnancies. Supposedly estrogen can make them grow. Hepatic Hemangiomas are almost always found incidentally - my u/s was for my gallbladder. But it was unnerving to hear that there were tumors on my liver, even though they were benign.
I hope the test goes well and that it's something harmless.

Hey Tiffany,

No liver issues here but I want to wish your boy loads of luck with his ultrasound...:goodluck:

Let us know how he gets on!

Dusty.
