Hi there, usually the only other thing I know they try for a flare up is steroids like prednisone. However due to your sons age and the nature of these meds I can see why the docs are going the milkshake route instead. However six weeks is a big ask and I think it is worth chatting with the doc about what another option, perhaps Budesonide? This is a steroid but is not as 'invasive' on the system as the pred. Trying to limit his diet so he still eats will not help, during a flare as far as the bowel is concerned food is food whether it be rice or chips and it will be aggrivated. If they insist on the shakes I would say Modulen is better than the E102 (think this is what it is called). The Modulen you mix up yourself with flavourings and I always drank it chilled and to me it actually tasted like milkshake - much better than the other stuff.

Hi and welcome! Though your son may hate the shakes, it is the safest way for your son to get into remission. As Angrybird said, many take steroids to stop a flare. But there are so many bad side effects associated with steroids. It may be unpleasant, but the shakes are the safest way to get him feeling well again.
