Last time I had a blood test and my red blood count was about 10.7. My family doctor would like me to take an iron supplement but many of them give me diarrhea. Do you have any suggestions for iron supplements that are less likely to cause side effect?

Ask if you can have an iron infusion. I've had several over the years and it's better than taking the pill as it can cause and wreak havoc on the gut.

It only takes 1 1/2 hrs. plus you get to relax in a recliner and rest. you have to go 2x to the infusion center and then you are good for a year or more.

My hematologist suggested it to me years ago because I was bleeding too much with AF and in the past, taking iron orally, sent me to the ER doubled over in pain. Insurance should cover it as it is an outpatient procedure.

Hope this information helps you. feel better!! :)

Hello!

I'm new here and new to Crohn's but I have had trouble with iron supplements giving me diarrhea as well for a long time. My doctor recently recommended I try FeraMax. It hasn't seemed to give me diarrhea and it seems to be absorbed better than the previous supplement I was on.

Good luck!

I TAKE DEXORANGE,A SYRUP OF IRON, FOLIC ACID AND VITAMIN B12. iTS NOT HARSH ON STOMACH AT ALL...AND TASTES REALLY GOOD.

@ kh216 :

you can try taking wheat grass juice in very small quantity and see if that is harsh on your stomach....if its not then you may continue taking that for a month and then see ..I am sure if you can tolerate it (few people have issue with it)..it will be enough to do the job. they come in both pill form and raw juice.

I take 2 Flintstones complete everyday, each chewable has 18mg iron but as I said I take 2. I have anemia problem and these do not effect my digestive system at all and Im pretty sensitive to iron I use to take Slo fe but made me sick. These are the only thing I can tolerate really. Also Centrum makes a child's chewable I double up on those as well and if my iron is really low ill do it 2 times a days since they don't bother me.

That is a liquid iron supplement and because it is liquid is not harsh on the stomach at all. I took this supplement for nearly a year, and loved it:)

Ive taken this and it is good and did not harm my digestive system, however it taste nasty and will stain your teeth if you can get past that your good to go because it does work, also its a little pricey. Ordering online is the cheapest way to get it.

I took something called SlowFE... you can get it in CVS or Walmart brand a lot cheaper usually called SlowIron... but be advised it is a slow release one so if you have an illeostomy its not advised to take it. I'm on the hunt for a new iron supp myself since I just got my new stomy.
