Aside from the difference in where its being pulled is there any actual difference between these two styles "loop" and "end" for the patient?

I had a loop.
My main exit was a beautiful big spout that kept output away from my skin.
The second exit though - it was right next to my skin and the output would burn through the barrier ring and I would always end up with a bit of output burn.
I'm not sure if this is the answer you were looking for?

Loop ileostomy's are where a loop of intestine is brought to the surface and a cut is made in the loop then fashioned into a stoma. The intestine is not cut right through. You basically have two openings- one that allows the stomach contents to be expelled through the stoma, the other is the 'downpipe' though you may not be even able to see it. Loop ileostomys are usually temporary and their reversal is a much easier operation.
With an end ileostomy the intestine is cut right through and the end of the small intestine is brought to the surface and fashioned into a stoma. They are usually permanent but can be reversed if necessary. Reversal is more complicated than it is for loop. They tend to cause less problems with skin irritation as a good 'spout' (stoma) can be made that keeps the contents of the bowel from leaking onto the skin.
I tried googling this but found it hard to find a proper explanation of the differences. Some sites even seemed to contradict others. I have seen a proper explanation in the past but can't find it now. Very frustrating. I'll keep on searching.
I have a different type of ileo. The bowel was cut right through so that a good spout could be formed from the end of the small intestine but there is also an opening for the lower part of the bowel though this is just a tiny slit at the base of my stoma.

Great explanation, Anna!!

I have a loop. Very rarely will I see anything happening in the bottom section of the loop and even then it is just mucus for me. The wafer tends to breakdown faster near the bottom of the stoma where the bottom half of the loop is because of the extra moisture, but I have had no serious issues with it to date.

Thank you so much for that explanation! When I woke up to 2 stomas I was shocked but apparently its going to shrink and only one of them is active. The other just keeps it company.

The bottom of mine is barely visible. I didn't even know it was there until about 6 months after surgery. I was doing a bag change and stuff started coming out the bottom. I freaked out thinking I had a hole somewhere, but then saw where it was coming from and started laughing. It was actually pretty cool!

Mine are quite apparent and sorry for the TMI but they look like two testicles. I know they will shrink though.

2thy I was the same. Couldn't work out why stuff was coming from the side - it was actually poo! I think it had been pushed down there by an over full bag during the night.
(see ngng, theres never TMI in the stoma sub forum :) )
By the way how are you recovering other than stoma issues? Is the wound healing well?
 anna

The Crohn's forum is a fun place to talk all kinds of yucky talk :) my wound is healing pretty nicely and I'm not as tender. Now the fun is just learning the intriquicies of living with this device. My ostomy nurse was so nice and gave me goodies to make it easier.

Yippee, presents! Its also fun when you get all the samples from the companies. :)
The things that make us happy now!!!!!.
You'll soon get used to all the intricacies and be an old hand like all of us. It gets so much easier as time goes on, at times you think the problems will never be overcome but you do get there.
Usually about the time the reversal is due. haha.

LOL! I am actually being a dork and excited about getting free samples from companies. What crappy gifts but new stuff nonetheless.

haha, not a dork, an ostomate (or ileosta/colosta if you really want to join the club)
