Monitoring Pred...

It depends on how your feeling. He would usually see me every 6-8 weeks. He would tell me to tapper the med down in 5mg increments. And he always says "call me if you get sicker". As far blood work goes I can't really remember anything special while on the Prednisone. I do know that your blood sugars tend to be elevated while on corticoid steroids so If you are diabetic that can be trouble. I know if you get sick with colds etc its a good idea (especially sore throats) to be seen just in case its Strep. I hope that helps.

I wondered about this myself as i was basically sent home from my first time in hospital and new diagnosis with three months of tapering pred and pretty much a 'see you in three months'!

I was gobsmacked. especially when after a couple of days, on dropping the dose from 60 to 40 I totally started feeling VERY strange and unwell. Not in my stomach, but everywhere else. Whole body unpleasantness. It took me 2 days to get a call back from the GI who told me I needed to see my GP as the feelings I described were NOT side effects of Pred (I could use a LOT of swearwords here - ignorant so and so).

I am 6 weeks in and have an appointment on monday for the first time. I actually don;t think they are that interested to be honest. Though I am dealing with the public health system here. The gastro department here are well known for being a bunch of b**tards, only interested in getting rid of the bad bits, no matter what else is going on like side effecst etc.

My GP was great though and gave me some valium temporarily to calm things down - worked a treat. I only used it 2-3 times. i actually felt better just knowing that all those weird feelings were the anxiety from pred and not me going mental!

Good luck

Thank you Imisspopcorn, yes this does help....I catch everything under the sun as is, so I'd have to be careful with viruses while on pred.

I know there are many of you that have been on pred and hope to hear how often you guys have to see the dr. while on it.

Shaz, I'm sorry they put you through all that. I'm glad your dr. gave you the valium, it's a comfort to know you have something if needed. If my Dr. suggests pred I will make sure that there is somebody (a nurse) to call for questions.
