Hi,

My son will be 11 in Sept. dx with Crohn's in May. Just started Remicade. He has been really mopey lately. Is it tiredness, the meds, pre-teen years? Is this something (else) I should worry about?

Hi and welcome! My son was also diagnosed this year and even before the meds he seemed really mopey. I know part of it is the general 15 year old teenage angst and moodiness but he was also anemic. Is your son dealing with anemia, also CD can cause malabsorption. It might be a good idea to get his vitamin levels checked. It seems alot of people with CD are Vitamin D deficient. I know B12 and folic acid have also been mentioned. If I am tagging them correctly, David can probably give you alot more info on this and advice on other possible reason...and Dusty too! Both are very knowledgeable. You might want to check out the Parents of kids with IBD subforum on this site too!

Welcome!

Hmmm tired and mopey. Hard when they are hitting the pre teen years as most pre teens are tired and moody. Yes, the meds (zyrtec etc) they give them prior to Remicade do make them very tired for a day or so. Also as we have discovered with our daughter they just get tired of being sick and tired and it comes out in moodiness etc. But, tiredness is also a sign of active disease and anemia. So frustrating because you don't want to over react to possible symptoms but don't want to write them off either.

So I have been of no help what so ever.

Clash has a good point about blood results. Anemia etc will make them tired. They pull blood at every Remi infusion so that should give you some indication of levels.

You should probably keep track of it and mention it to doc and they will help you figure out if it is just normal pre teen stuff or if it is a symptom of disease.

How far along in his Remi treatment is he? Maybe log moods and lethargy and if it doesn't improve as treatment moves along that may be an indication of something more serious underlying.

Sorry to hear about your son. Boy, he's got a lot going on right now...just Dx with a chronic illness. And I am assuming it is flared up since he just got dx, so he's not absorbing the nutrients he needs to function and grow....and he's nearly a teen! I think his moodiness is a combination of everything.

I'd do like the others suggested and get those levels checked. Maybe your GI could recommend another family with a child his age with crohns and he could meet someone who understands. We have a summer camp around here just for IBD kids. They can meet other kids and adult counselors all with IBD and feel some support.

Good luck with everything!

I agree with all of the above lad!

I don't think it just one thing but all of those things combined. Also with your boy only recently being diagnosed I think perhaps some of what is going on now is the culmination of the disease likely being present and undetected for quite some time. The stress on the body certainly does take its toll and I found with my own two it took quite some time following diagnosis and treatment for them to reach full condition again both physically and psychologically.

Good luck and keep us posted with how you are all doing.

That's a tough one, lad. I worry the same way about my son with Crohn's. Then I stop myself and remember how his brother was at the same age. The older one was sad, worn out, and cried a lot in middle school. Long story short, he graduated from college this spring and is an amazing and exceedingly happy young man. So when the younger one with Crohn's is crabby, pessimistic, and sleeps a lot, I try to chalk it up to "teenager-hood" and keep on keepin' on. Of course, nobody says you can't bring it up with the GI at every single visit (like I did) so YOU feel better for a little while.

P.S. My son's been on Remicade for 7 years. He used to be very sleepy that day because he takes Benedryl beforehand. Now that he's bigger, the Benedryl doesn't affect him. I haven't heard that the Remicade itself makes you tired.
