For an abdominal MRI do we need to drink as much of that nasty oral contrast as a regular person would? Normally I drink 3 bottles but I'm thinking since my GI is shortened that it shouldn't have to be as much and won't take as long to light up the intestines.

If you are talking about a small bowel follow-through, you drink the crap in increments and the radiologist checks on you periodically under x-ray to see how far the barium has traveled. Once it has traveled to the designated spot, you don't have to drink any more of it, so I imagine you will not need to drink as much as you did before.

I just had an MRI with contrast through an IV. No prep, only 4 hours without food or water.

I had to drink contrast for abdominal (as well as the iv contrast). I think I had to drink the same amount but I remember telling them they better hurry up and do it or it all would have drained out. Ended up having to drink a second lot because they took so long and then they inserted it via my stoma. A lot of bother for one MRI.

Insertion in the stoma isn't that bad actually...way better than the old fashioned up the bum way...lol
