I was trying to find the answer to a question about my disease when my son found this site. I've read some of the stories so I should write mine. I've had crohns disease for aprox. 40 yrs and I have learnt a few things!

I was first dx after the removal of a tumour in my bowel when I was 30. I can't even give an accurate number of the amount of surgeries I've had over the years but it's over 15. I now have short bowel syndrome, osteoporosis, inflammatory rheumatism but I still have my sense of humour! :thumleft:

I trained as a councillor and hypnotherapist but was unable to work as the crohns was so aggressive. In between all of this I married, moved country and came back again, had 3 children (including twins!), divorced, moved house and have been so lucky with the great children I have (all of whom partly grew up up in a w/c!) I try to enjoy life as much as possible. I love doing lots of things when I can, I live close to the sea and the mountains so I try and get out as much as possible as I believe this really helps! I love meeting people so I hope to make some good friends on this forum.

I have worked on a crohns help line in London while I lived there dealing mainly with teenagers. I wish there was more support here in Ireland.

I have a question at the moment which is worrying me a lot and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I saw my surgeon yesterday after being referred by my GI guy. I have developed a protruding hernia which is quite painful and causes nausea. The surgeon basically said to operate on the area any more would be "detrimental". When I asked what he meant he would not explain so I feel very in the dark about my options. Does any one have any advice on what I could do?

I hope I'll hear from some one and I'm so happy to have found this site. Talking about our illness is so important.

Ps. Is there any one out the as old as me? Around the 60 mark! Haha!

Best regards, Miss Billey

HI Billey, yes there are a couple your age here! :welcome: to the forum. We could learn from you too. I have had Crohns 20 years but symptoms long before that. I have had 2 resections. You have had 15 surgeries?? Wow, you got any parts left in ya???

There are also many here from Ireland, you will soon meet them. Where exactly is your hernia located that is protruding? I guess the doctor means it could be worse to operate. Maybe getting a second opinion? I am sure is it painful. Are you on any meds now?

You will go along way with your humour and good attitude, glad you found us. Hopefully someone can answer your question!

Welcome Billey! Though you've been so much, I am happy to hear you haven't lost your sense of humor! But I am sorry about the hernia. I wish I could offer some advice, but if I did, I'd only be guessing. I agree with Pen, if your surgeon isn't being very helpful and clear, it may be helpful to seek a second opinion.

I hope you feel better soon!

Hi Miss Billey and welcome :)

I concur with the others above who suggest another opinion. That the doctor wasn't willing to communicate with you says it all to me.

How are your Crohn's Symptoms these days? Are you hopefully in remission? Are you on any meds?

I wish you well!

Hi Billey. I'm in Ireland too and even though i haven't had as many surgeries/different illnesses as you have(so sorry for you), i do feel as though there is no way out and i am never going to be able to travel, eat what i want, wear what i want, date women, basically do anything i enjoy ever again. So i understand your frustration and pain. Welcome to the forum, i already feel so much less alone since i joined :).

Hi Jill David and Pen.

Thank you for your kind replies. To day is so exiting for me as my son is teaching me to use the I pad so I can connect with you all. So here goes! I am very dyslexic and writing is something I don't do, so this is very liberating. I have noticed that in hospital there is no way to meet other bowely people. I offered to start a group but that was a no go. So it is great to find this site. My chrones is aggressive but then 2 and a half years a go I started a trial drug. It is originally made for arthritis then found to effect the inflammatory process in the bowels. It has changed my life. The inflammation process has eased. But the effect of so many ops is now causing problems.

Please tell me about all about yourself's and your experiences. Thank you so much for replying to my thread!

Lots of love,
Billey
