My name is Joanne and im 36 yrs old, I live in Perth in Scotland and I have just been diagnosed with Crohns.

Back in Feb this year after having severe abdominal pains and after 5 days of constant pain I called the out of hours doctor to cut along story short he admitted me too hospital with what he thought was 'peritonitis'.

During my stay in hospital I had many tests which included colonoscopy tests, ultrasound, MRI & a Barium Follow Through, some tests were ok and some were not nice at all I was told that I might have 'crohns disease' the doctors also detected that I had a restriction and narrowing of the bowel from the small bowel to the large bowel and they thought that this could be corrected with steroids, after a week and further tests the restriction was still there, so the only other option was surgery.

The consultants were unsure what I had and at times threw lots of 'this might be wrong with you' which got me very confused and scared.

After 5 weeks of constant prodding and poking I had my 3rd barium meal and a grey grained section and a squashed tube was located on a part of my bowel, the surgeon made the decesion to remove the restriction on my bowel, but when I was opened up the striction had popped back to its normal way :confused2:

The consultants were still not sure if I had Crohns Disease or not :ymad:

I was in hospital for a little over 6 weeks and when I was discharged still nothing was found to be the cause of my pain :confused2::confused2:

From April to Oct I have had more tests and visits to the hospital and I have still been in some pain, some days more pain than others, my last appointment was on the 11th Nov and it was then that I was told that they are 99% sure that I have Crohns, I picked up my first lot of steroids and start them tomorrow morning, Im a little scared of these steroids as I dont want to put on any weight.

I stopped smoking while I was in hospital and have put on a stone and a half because of it, when I left the hospital I was 10 stone 3 and very happy but now my weight is creeping up towards 12 stone, im very annoyed with myself and the pressure of putting on more weight is getting me down.

I cant get my head around whats happening too me as I have never been this unwell before. I always assumed that people who suffer from Crohns are very slim, im NOT! my stomach is constantly huge and swollen, im always tired and have no energy to do anything, im always in bed early.

I have a months supply of Budesonide of which Im too take 3 tablets three times a day, my next appointment with the consultant is the 9th Dec and then the dosage will go up but the tablets I take will go down to 2 a day.

Im also waiting for another colonoscopy to come through the letterbox, again this is stressing me out as the last one I had they had too stop as the camera kept hitting adhesions and it was too painful for them too carry on, Im also waiting too have another MRI scan as well and if this does not help the last soloution is more flipping surgery!!

Im looking forward too reading all the posts on here and hopefully this forum will be able to help me get my head round, what I have too do to get through all this.

Sorry for the long post but im hoping you peeps can put me straight.

Jo

Hi Joanne and welcome!

Sorry to hear you've been going through rough times. Getting diagnosed is often a very lengthy and frustrating process but at least now you have some treatment which will hopefully do it's job in making you feel better.

Try not to worry about the budesonide making you put on weight. It really didn't do anything to mine at all when I was on it.

Good luck with everything :)

Hello Joanne, best wishes from across the pond. I lived in London for about 14 mths in 88-89 and had the good fortune to visit Scotland during that time. It is a beautiful place. I'm sorry to read that your experience has been so difficult, I know this can be a frustrating disease. My family was extremely helpful when I was initially diagnosed, but one thing that was a super tool was a journal. It helped me to keep things in order, which can be a bit trying without writing it down, but it was also a place to express all of my fears, prayers and hopes. I look forward to hearing updates from you!

Good Luck

Welcome Joanne!! Were you awake for your scope? Did they not remove anything during your surgery? Most are either fully sleeping or on the twilight meds during scopes and have no memories of the procedure. If you're having another, I'd ask about these options!! I hope you get some solid answers so you can be treated!! Good luck!!

Hi Dexky - Yes I was fully awake for the colonoscopy I was offered the sedation but I turned it down as I didnt think it would have been that bad!!! and no my surgeon did not remove the bit that was causing me all the pain, the consultant that Im seeing at the hospital now, has said that he wished the surgeon had removed the part that was causing the pain rather than leaving it as the restriction had cleared itself!

When I have the next Colonoscopy I will have the sedation for sure.

Hi Jo
and welcome fellow Brit

we all understand about the weight thing!
I wanted to clarify with you, 3 budesonide 3 times a day? The normal dosage is 3 (each tablet is 3mg = 9mg) once daily, an hour before food, preferably breakfast. That means you're taking 27mg?? Doesn't sound right to me! Please check before you take them!
lotsa luv

Hi Joan

yes thats right! Budesonide 3 times a day (breakfast, dinner, bedtime) 3mg, to avoid indigestion remedies at the same time, take 30 to 60 mins before food, swallow whole.

Is this too much or not enough? im worried now :confused2:

Oh I think Joan thought you were taking 3 TABLETS 3 times a day, rather than 3mg.

1 tablet 3 times a day sounds normal.

Hiya Joanne

phew!!
I was a bit worried there!
But even so... we don't tend to space budesonide out thro the day, it's the norm to take all the dose first thing in the morning, before breakfast, this is cos one of the side effects is insomnia, so to take one at bedtime still doesn't make sense, I've just read all this on my leaflet inside the box, but who am I to question the doc!! lol

ah that explains why I found it difficult to get too sleep last night! I was clock watching for hours and it really annoyed me as I was knackered!!

I will call my consultant and see if I can speak to him with ref too taking all three at the same time.

Hiya Joanne

yeah insomnia is a killer with steroids! The earlier you take them (6am) the better, the effects can wear off by bedtime then. I'm sure your doc will let you take them all at once.
Bearing in mind that budesonide is a lot milder than Pred, you might not get insomnia or the lovely moon face!
good luck

Aw Joanne

don't worry about the moon face, it may or may not happen, it's just a possibility, one of the side effects of corticosteroids like budesonide and prednisolone.
You have to look at the benefits of these meds, getting a moon face is a small price to pay to be free from pain. And anyway, once you're off them, any swelling soon goes away!
