Here goes,

9/12/07 Things were going great, we just got home from the hospital with our perfect little baby girl. Mom was living her dream!!! About three days later she had some sharp pains(she said felt like labor pains) but they went away 10 minutes later. We thought as new parents these pains were probably part of healing from natural birth. She went to get her 1 week after birth checkup at her OB. While she was there she asked about the pains. Her OB said she should not have these pains and started poking her belly, near her appendix was sore and her OB said if the pains persist to have our family doctor check them out. Her pains did go away for about a week, but they came back worse and we don't have a family doc. My health insurance states if you go to the ER for a non emergency they will make you pay a lot of it on your own. So we went to an urgent care place that was on our PPO plan. This place was a $hit hole( I don't have time to tell how bad Airport Urgent Care in Toledo OH was) the doctor wrote a script for IBS and told her to drink warm fluids and use a heating pad. After going to 5 or 6 pharmacies I found out they don't even make the script any more. One place did have some left so I took home about 85% of the pills she was supposed to take. She took the pills and followed the recommendations and the pain got worse over the next month. I talked to a nutrition friend of mine who said to go to a health food store and tell them she has IBS and get some Acidophiles. Talking to the lady at the counter we came to the conclusion that she needs pro biotics because she was on an IV of antibiotics for strep B while in labor. So we tried these pro biotics and digestive enzymes for another month because it all made sense. Meanwhile her pain has been getting worse this whole time. She would be crying in her sleep. ( I hated doctors already before this happened, I have had a lot of surgeries and I actually stitch myself up if needed from time to time) So we finally signed up for a regular family doctor. She said "Looks like IBS" BUT go to the hospital and get a CT scan to be sure. That same night on 12/6/07 last Thursday her doctor called at 9:30 PM and told her to get to the ER because she had an obstruction in he bowel and needed emergency surgery. She was admitted that night and had her operation on Saturday. They had to remove some of her large and some of her small intestine. The pieces were sent to "the lab" and she was diagnosed with CD on Wednesday of this week. She will not be out of the hospital till next week. Our daughter is actually doing better because mom was not able to make enough milk for her because she was not eating much for about 2 months. Now the little one is getting a lot of formula and loving it. But mom is still in the hospital with a broken heart over how she will not be able to pick her daughter for a month and has CD. I am mad at myself for trusting the urgent care doctor so much. :ybatty: Not sure what to do but I especially don't trust doctors now. Her doctor said " Once she heals from surgery she can see his partner about her long term treatments" I am thinking about telling all these doctors to go FU{K themselves in the middle of a busy highway!!! We are talking about trying to go natural with this stuff called primal defense. I also have a disease called dishydrotic excema, it is genetic with no known cure, brought on by stress causes my skin to blister up like bad sun burn water blisters and bad itching. When the doctor said she could prescribe a steroid to help me with discomfort I told her to keep it. Mine has not come back since then. It is not even close to s bad as CD but kind of the similar on the outside of the skin. I am now going to visit my wife and my baby!! This actually was the short censored version of the story. But I am glad we have a place like this to talk and bounce ideas around.

Thank you!!

Jim

Hey Jim, Welcome to the forum. hope your wife is out of the hospital and back with you and the baby real soon. Maybe then you can introduce her to this site. I think you'll both find this is a great place for anyone dealing with this disease. On a positive note, one of the most difficult parts of this; the diagnosis, is out of the way. There are lots of great people on here, and I think (if my memory serves) a number of women who either became symptomatic or came out of remission after childbirth. think they and your wife will really relate.

You folks really have a lot on your plate at the moment. What with the baby, and the diagnosis, and of course the holidays. Just take things one step at a time... I think once you folks are over the initial hurdles of this, you can start to look forward to the future. It's not a nice diagnosis, but if handled correctly, it does offer one that; a future. There are any number of diagnosis that don't.

OK, enuff preaching from me. Take care, all the best, and I look forward to any progress reports you get a chance to post on your wifes' recovery, etc,. okay?

Sorry about the many problems you have had with the medical system. I have a similar story but not quite as bad as yours.

First off, I would like to tell you the Low Dose Naltrexone or LDN may be something you could try for your skin problem, if it is in the auto immune category. Since it can be brought on by stress, I suspect this is the case. Do a search on the forum and you will find a wealth of information and links about this novel approach to treat auto-immune disease including Crohn's.

Welcome to the forum. I think you will like it here. Lots of great people with a wide range of knowledge.

Thanks Kev and Dan,

As far as what I have, I don't know if it falls into the auto immune category, I do think that skin blisters are a way of the body protecting itself. Is soon as I learned it cant be cured I decided to forget about it, it was before we were on line and knew about forums. It has never come back yet except for a few tiny spots. That was about three years ago. I was working out of town and was stressed because I was away from home and working 60hrs a week.

I just told my wife she never has to work again unless she wants to, I am going to work on keeping her stress level down. I know I have never really tried to work as hard as I can, so I have some reserve to pick up some hours and make some more $$$.

I will definitely show this to my wife sometime. I think some of this is a little scary for her to read for the very near future. Someday!!!

Right now she is a little scared because her gut is making the same loud noises that started all this. They said there is a small chance she will come home on Monday, she is still not on solid foods yet.

I will keep ya posted!!!

Thanks!!

Jim

Welcome to the forums. I am sorry your wife has gone through so much in such a short amount of time. People seem to get the first flare at the worst of times. I am on primal defense and I feel it does more than the crap the GI gave me. I think right now so little is known about CD that docs just prescribe whatever will help the symptoms that will help the medical industry make money. I would try a more healthy lifestyle with primal defense and stress relief. Also when she can exercise I would have her start a light workout gradually raising intensity on a comfortable basis. If this does not work then try medications. Also have her keep a food diary of foods that don't agree with her.

Look up as much information as you can on medications and go through with her the side affects of each.

Good luck and tell her we are wishing for the best here on Crohn's forum

Those sounds she's hearing (and we all sort of take them for granted, think wev'e all become accustomed to them - and I think we all think they're louder than what a 'normal' stomach would make).. anyway, those are bowel sounds indicating her GI tract is healing... In fact, i'm betting that doctors (more likely nurses) check her everyday with stethoscope to listen for those sounds. They won't start her on a solid food diet until they start to hear those sounds. you can check with the nurses/doctors, think you'll find that's whats going on, and you can alleviate her fears.. considering everything she's just been through, it has to be pretty rough on her nerves.. A person almost gets paranoid over a noise, or gurgle, or even just plain old gas. she may not be truly comfortable taking ANY medical persons word over what is good, and what isn't. From what you've said, you have reason to be very distrustful around doctors, and given your wifes recent history, she may be feeling the same way. You may want to dial that back, despite probably very good reason for feeling that way, in front of your wife till she get's her strength back, and has accepted her 'diagnosis'. I say that because there are times when people NEED to believe, even if just a little, to get them thru the rough patches. If she is feeling totally helpless and at the mercy of these doctors, AND she sees that mistrust mirrored in you, it's going to raise her stress levels JUST when she needs to minimize her stress. I have had my share of clown docs and great ones... and I'm not trying to defend them - in fact, i started a thread in another area where we all contribute our best 'bad' doctor jokes - sort of a tongue in cheek love/hate relationship vent site. Anyway, just a thought. Say hi to the missus, give her all of our best, OK
