nausea and vomiting

Hi, I am new to the forum, although I have been reading other people's comments for a while. Was diagnosed 1 year ago, after 20-30 years of irritable bowel type symptoms. I am an ARNP, and so I have been able to educate myself pretty extensively on the disease. The only exception is regarding what are "typical" symptoms. My GI doc is pretty reticent and the literature lists just about every GI symptom imaginable.
So it has been really helpful to read the list of common food triggers on one of the forums. I found that my triggers are similar to other people, spicy foods being number one.
I also find that I am hungry alot, and get nauseated if I don't eat, which I read others complaining about. Since my symptoms currently fall in the mild range, I actually have gained some weight that I didn't especially want to gain since my diagnosis.
I have had one problem recently that I hope someone else has some insight into. I will eat, I feel absolutely fine, no nausea whatsoever, and suddenly my whole meal comes up! And once I have thrown up, I am not hungry, but not nauseated either. It has only happened once, and within a day I was eating again (and moving my bowels, so there is obviously no obstruction), so I have not reported it to my GI doc. I figure if it was serious I would have other symptoms. Any comments?

Hi Norma and welcome to the forum :) While we hope all members stick around and become regular contributors to the forum, that you're an ARNP gets me on my knees begging you to stick around and contribute on occasion :D

I'm not sure what caused the vomiting episode but with the nausea when hungry, what is your thought on the potential of SIBO or maybe low blood sugar?

Again, welcome to the forum. We're really glad you're here.

Indeed could be a lot of different causes. I've randomly thrown up a couple of times but I know what they were related to (obstruction, new pain med I wasn't used to and a severe sinus headache). Its completely normal to feel fine after vomiting. Even when I'm sick with the flu I feel that feeling of relief. Sounds like if you had absolutely no other symptoms then your body simply rejected whatever you put in it. Whether it was already full from a previous meal that hadn't moved on through yet, I don't know. May want to have your blood sugar tested as suggested (my mom would vomit randomly in the mornings because she was a diabetic but didn't know at the time) and tell your GI about it anyway (no need to keep secrets and its not like they don't have time for you).

Welcome to the forum! :D

David, nice to meet you. I was in particular referring to your survey of other people's food triggers when I stated how helpful it was to know to me that my symptoms are fairly typical.
As far as the SIBO, my GI doc is treating me for this with intermittent xifaxan and probiotics. It has helped my fatigue and overall well being alot.
I will stay on and post occasionally. I was a primary care NP for over 20 years before my diagnosis and found out how much I DIDN'T know about Crohn's when I got diagnosed!
Thanks for the welcome, Crabby (love the nickname)!
Diagnosed: May 2011
Meds: Pentasa, xifaxan, probiotics, calcium/vitamin D

Nice to meet you too :)

It pleases me to hear you'll contribute once in awhile, that means a lot to us, thank you :) And of course hopefully we can give you plenty in return.

As you have fatigue, have you had your vitamin B12 levels tested? Anemic at all?

When you're on the Xifaxan do you notice the morning nausea being worse, the same, or better?

And have you ever pondered trying the Specific Carbohydrate Diet?

Thanks! :D

Test all you vitamin levels along with the B12. Might as well if you're having blood work done. Being low in Iron and other nutrients can also cause fatigue.
