Joseph was started on azathioprine just over a week ago, and over the weekend the nausea has really started to kick in. OK first thing in the morning but then kicks in just after lunch, subsequently he's not eaten tea for the last two nights.

He takes 75mg in the morning, and having read some of your other treads might try giving it to him of an evening. Will phone ibd nurse in morning to check ok to do, also first lot of bloods should be back as well.

On experience does the nausea pass? He is really fed up after two days and just wants to stop taking it altogether.

Thanks for the space to vent thoughts / worries.

Andrew was on Aza for 6 weeks and never had nausea. I gave him the tablet immediately after dinner (I wanted it to be a big meal) so that it wouldn't irritate his stomach - seemed to work. Maybe you could change from morning to after dinner, that way is is also hopefully sleeping through the nausea if he still gets it.

Hi, my son is on Aza (almost two years) and he did have a lot of nausea at first, but hard to tell if it was his crohn's or the meds. He is much better now but still has occasional days of nausea. I still give it in the morning but just after he has had breakfast. Hope your son is feeling better soon! xx

Ginger capsules can counteract nausea.

I have taken Aza but never experienced nausea. I take ginger for other reasons, but maybe that is why the Aza never bothered me?

Hey Ands,

My two never experienced but over time I have read of many here that do suffer with that side effect in its initial stages. Quite a few say that taking the Imuran before bed does overcome the problem simply because they sleep through it. On average it seems to last about 2-3 weeks before disappearing.

As Dan has suggested, perhaps some ginger may be beneficial.

Spoke to ibd nurse this morning. Dropping dose to 50mg and splitting it to take half in morning and half tea time. Also want to test blood amylase level just in case. Kept home from school today but so far so good.

They want him on the aza for 4 years, or to see him through puberty, so fingers crossed we can find a balance.

Thanks again for listening. X
