My gasterologist said he was 95% sure I have colitis but can't treat me until I have my colonosopy. I haven't been able to afford it in 2 years. Its going to cost 1500. I need t know if there is a home treatment plan. I'm so tired of being miserable all the time.

Hi and welcome. Sorry I can't help. It's terrible money stands in the way of treatment. Sending you my support.

although you may not know for sure if its colitis or not, keeping a food diary may help, you would at least know what foods make you hurt more and cause more problems so you can avoid them. even if you are diagnosed for sure food diarys are one of the best ways ive found to know what i can and cannot eat, and how to avoid at least some of the stomach pain... hope this helps some, good luck! :)

Are you in the states? Do you have insurance? If not, you can sign up for Obamacare. I did, and my colonscopy was $300.

Living in Canada it's so crazy to think that people in other countries have to actually pay for healthcare! It's really ridiculous, and something you should not have to worry about when you are suffering with an illness. I'm really sorry!

My advice is to take note of the foods that irritate your bowels, and just don't eat them! It can be odd things that you would never think of. For me, too many veggies creates huge issues, I'm in the bathroom all day! Apart from that, stress can also cause flares, so try to exercise as much as possible to help yourself deal with stress, and get enough of sleep.

Good luck, and I wish you all the best!

You might try a probiotic. It hasn't been a cure or even a complete treatment for me (I'm on other drugs), but it has helped.

I know it has been a while since this thread was active.... But a couple of non prescription things known to help are:

Fish oil: 2-4g per day for its anti-inflammatory effects, and
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus (probiotic)- this strain has been proven in some studies to have efficacy in UC.

As jwfoise mentioned they don't replace medical treatment- but are by far the most studied complementary therapies available without a prescription.

Food Diaries are very helpful- I know to avoid windy vege like: cucumber, capsicum, onions, cabbage, beans and also strongly flavoured foods like curry or even just pepper when I'm flaring. It just means I don't irritate an already inflamed and angry gut- but all of us have different trigger foods so making your own diary is highly recommended.

All the best- hope you can get a definitive answer soon.

It doesn't look like you have been back since you posted, but in case you come back, I think that one of the most promising things you can try at home is FMT, but you need to have your donor tested first. Otherwise, the rest you can do at home.
