I hope someone can help me, I am feeling very torn right now. I have Colitis. My doc. has perscribed Mercaptopurine for me and I don't think I want to take it. I have been taking Lialda for a few months now and besides having to use the bathroom 3-5 times in the morning, I have been doing well. The rest of the day I feel normal, I have started exercising again and I think taking this med. might set me back, with all of the horrible things I've read about that it does to you. I told my doc. that I still get a feeling of urgency in the morning, and how many times I use the bathroom so maybe that's why he wanted to try this med. but maybe I didn't comunicate that besides the morning bathroom trips I feel fine. What should I do?? Thanks.

Hi jengirl. I can understand your concern about taking 6-MP. However, if you're having to go 3-5 times in the morning that means you are NOT in remission and there's a decent chance the Lialda will not get you there. 6-MP is an outstanding drug and many have had great success with it. Yes, there is a chance for side effects but careful monitoring can reduce those chances. If you decide not to utilize 6-MP, I implore you to try something else as remission should ALWAYS be the goal. You do not want chronic inflammation in your body, that can lead to a whole host of problems in the future.

Thanks David, it makes me feel better to hear that it is an outstanding drug, I think I will give it a try, if I don't like it I could always stop and try somthing different.

I'm with David, at least give it a try, if it's not what you want or like after awhile or if it's not working theres always something else.

I was told I should go on Lialda about a year ago but I didn't like the side-effects and such so I didn't take it or even start it and was in bad shape for the past year. I just recently started Humiera

jengirl, one thing you can do is ask your GI how they're going to monitor you on 6-MP. Questions for them:

1. Are you going to do a TPMT test on me before I start 6-MP?
2. Are you going to monitor my metabolites such as 6-TGN and 6-MMP?
3. How often are you going to draw my blood while I'm on 6-MP?

Read those links to educate yourself (feel free to ask us questions if it's confusing) and ask them those questions and they'll know you mean business :)
