I am about to have laproscopic resection. 20 cm of my distal and terminal ileum, and a portion of my colon will be removed because of a bad stricture. I know everyone is different, but to all those that have experienced resection surgery:

Did you need/end up with a temporary stoma??????

No I did not have a temp stoma. I don't see why that would be necessary unless more of your bowel is infected but not bad enough to be removed. Honestly I have no idea why you would need one. Is that what they're telling you?

OMG - it was mentioned that it was a possibility. I had to sign a piece of paper that approved the following complications: stoma, blood transfusion, one larger incision for a hand assist. The last two make sense, but the first is very unnerving!

Thank you both for replying, you have made me feel much better:)

Update: My GI doctor called, and told me that in 11 years he has never had a patient end up with an unplanned stoma!!:)

They will always mention the worse case scenario's as they have to ensure they obtained informed consent. Plus they never really know what is going to confront them once they get in there.

You are heading into surgery in the best possible position, that being it is planned so the docs at the very least have a damn good idea of what they are dealing with.

My daughter was not diagnosed until she was on the table, it was emergency surgery, her bowel was a mess and she ended up with quite a large resection but still did not require a stoma. I think you will be just fine.

All the best, :)

As Dusty said, the consent forms always cover worst case senarios, and that should all be discussed with you before you sign them. As well, you have the right to read the WHOLE form and ask ANY questions you may have. :)

I have had three resections, and "stoma" (as well as many other things) were always listed, but I never woke up with one...lol.

I am waiting for a phone call for my 4th surgery in which I KNOW I will wake up with one, as that is what I am going for....

Very good question! Just remember for next time to be sure you have all of your questions answered BEFORE you sign the consent form (if possible, of course... :) )

Good luck with your surgery. :)

I had a resection same as what you'll have last monday and my biggest concern was the stoma. the stats my surgeon gave me was that a stoma would not be required unless the join in the bowel leaks after surgery and this is only in 4% of cases and would be temporary to let the bowel heal and usually was in peolpe with extensive disease or other underlying conditions so he told me not to worry about it. Good luck with the surgery and if you want any more details just ask.

I've had 2 resections - right side hemi 12 yrs ago & resection of neo terminal iliem 2 years ago.Never needed a stoma, but have been on loperamide for 12 years due to short gut.
good Luck

E13 boy Serovera AMP,Loperamide(due to short bowel)

I had a resection and the surgery seemed to go ok untill a week after the surgery I was still in the hospital and I had free air. Nothing was working and I got told that I needed an emergency surgery. I went in for the emergency surgery and was told if there is no hole (leak) then there will be no temp ostomy. There was no hole (leak) and I still woke up with one. I was told I would have it for 2 weeks and it wound up being 5 weeks. 3 surgeries in 5 weeks. I had the reversal and everything worked fine after. But it was there for 5 weeks. 5 weeks later the reversal I had an abscess at the anastamosis and they suggested another surgery. I refused and it healed on its own with the meds. Longer stay in the hospital but no surgery that stay.
Even though I only had it for 5 weeks I was not prepared for it and it was not expected.
