Hi,

I am new but I have a question if anyone has experienced this or know what is going on. My doctor requested me to have a bowel movement sample and then he called me back a wk later and wanted to have another colonoscopy (last one 4yrs ago). However, this morning when I went to the bathroom my bowel had blood in it. I know this is real gross but I have never really experienced this before. The blood was in my bowel and it gradually turned the water red and there was a lot of mucus along with it. My back is hurting a little but nothing unbareable. I calle dmy doctor and he is suppose to call me back. Has anyone else experienced this or know what is going on?

Thanks

Yes I have and so have many others on the forum. The first time I was hospitalized is because there was a toilet full of bright red blood. It means you have an open wound somewhere. I was bleeding bright red from my Terminal Ileum (it is possible to be bleeding from higher up and still see bright red blood) from ulcers. A colonoscopy is a good start but if they don't find anything then they may do various other tests like a CT scan, small bowel series/barium swallow, MRI etc. to find the source of the bleeding. Or the doctor my also try a course of steroids if your blood work shows active inflammation (which you likely do since mucus is a sign of inflammation). Its possible when your GI calls you back they may want to see you right away or may request that you go to the ER. Personally I always went to the ER to get fluids, something for the pain and they would run some tests and contact my GI for me.

Keep us posted!

Thank u

I was put on steroids yesterday along with azathioprine 50 mg. I did think bout going to the ER but I didn't think they could anything for the pain but I think I am going to go because isn't getting any better. Thank u for the advice. I haven't had a flare for two yes and I had Crohn's for 4 so I am still a little new at what I should and shouldn't do.But thank u Crabby u have been a great help.

No problem. The meds can take a while to start working so if you go to the ER at least they'll give you some IV fluids and something for the pain and should give you some peace of mind as well. They might do blood work or other tests, ask them what they can do for you like a small bowel series, CT scan, you know whatever, just ask if they can do any tests to make sure its not something super serious you know? Good luck and update whenever possible.

BTW what steroid? Prednisone or Entocort?
