I have been battling what has been over a year of hell! It wasn't until just 2 weeks ago after I had the camera/capsule pill test that it was confirmed that I have a mild case of Crohn's with ulcerations throughout the bowel and intestine. I have a very unique story.

I also have had chronic migraines (12/month at least) due to 8 herniated discs damage throughout my back/neck for the past 21 years. For 19 years I was on amitriptiline which was supposed to help with nerve pain for my back/neck. I decided to come off of it last sept. and that's when EVERYTHING hit the fan! I first began having a 3 month bout of horrific coughing. This was followed by an inability to swallow any liquid but water (irritation feeling in my throat that they thought was acid reflux but it wasn't). This was then followed by horrific stomach pains, vomiting, diarhea, bathroom urgency, OB-gyn issues, etc. I was put on 10 anti biotics in a 3 month span as Dr.'s didn't know what type of an "infection" I had. I was seen by so many GI dr.'s, ran my course of all of the major procedures-some that ruled out crohn's (which my dad has). I lost over 20 lbs in a couple of mos. Then slowly I started beginning to figure things out on my own.

Apparently amitriptiline (which I was on for 19yrs for back reasons) can also be used to higher one's tolerance to pain especially in GI issues. So it was likely that all the years I was on it, my GI issues were being masked. Then I come off of it and everyhing goes haywire. Then on top of that the 10 anti biotics and steroids in 3 mos. didn't help I'm sure. So now I've been back on amitriptiline. Causes weight gain so gained all lost weight back. But my pain issues are still there. Literally everything I eat kills my stomach. I've been on all sorts of diets and nothing helps.

Finally I was just diagnosed with Crohn's recently. I see 3 GI Dr.'s-1 of whom is holistic. I was advised to finish up my regimen of pro/pre biotics in next few wks then begin anti inflammatories to treat the crohn's?

Ive been trying to digest this all- also while trying to wedding plan for my 10/7/12 wedding. I've been miserable, in pain all of the time. I also have a stressful job as a mental health therapist so that adds to my stress. I have at least 4 dr. appts per week and have spent THOUSANDS on meds, treatments, procedures, food, etc. even with insurance. I am hoping that this forum will be a good support for me being with others who can relate.

Hello Renee :welcome: Yes you have had a rough ride to say the least. Crohns has alot of other manifestations that no everyone has. I have gone the holistic route and helped for a tiny bit but diet isnt everything. Just if you eat high fats and alot of fiber you will pay. YOU would be a good candidate for Remicade. It is now said to hit it hard and then back off.

Not allmeds help us either. Trial and error is the name of the game and after 20 years I know what to do to cope. Probiotics helps everyone, not just crohnies.

It would be good to get your b12, vitamin D levels checked. Alot of crohnies are low on them. I would seek a colonoscopy that will show alot more. Glad you joined us.

Hi Renee and welcome.

Awwww, you poor thing, I'm sorry you're going through so much :(

Yes, amitriptyline is actually taken by some here to help with their symptoms and we have a support club for it.

You may want to look into trying a little yoga, it may help with some of your neck and migraine issues as well.

In addition to the B12 and D that Pen mentioned above, have your Magnesium levels been checked? Mg deficiency isn't uncommon in people with Crohn's Disease, especially if it's active in the ileum, and it can also lead to migraines.

What medications are they planning to put you on?

Again, welcome. I hope you become a regular part of our community. We're here for you anytime!

Welcome Renee!
I'm so sorry about the pains you've been living with for so long.
I really hope that you and your docs can come up with a plan that works for you.
And soon.
You definitely deserve a break.

Hi Renee! I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems you've been having! I know it's hard, but there has to be some relief in finally knowing what's wrong then stressing about what it could be for so long. Silver lining, right? Good luck with everything! :)
