hi I am male married 47 years old with a history of complex spinal problems .the reason I mention the spinal problems is so ..I had ALIF surgery that's a fusion where they go through your abdomen .this was 18 months ago and my bowels have not been the same since ..going back to 1985 I had ...without any warning a PR bleed I was fit slim a none smoker /drinker and I swam a mile a day .I went to hospital and after many test I was told that I had ulcerative colitis .I suffered with this for years and my health went down hill so much so I lost my job .I was on asacol tablets .I had the colonoscopies and after about 10 years all my symptoms went away no more abdominal pain and normal BM .
around this time I had my first spinal operation it was a laminectomy at L4/L5 I recovered from that and was reasonably pain free and bowel wise no problems.but then I got divorced and started a new relationship with the lady that I am still with now .I started with bad back pain again and in 2007 needed more spinal surgery after this surgery I was still in pain and was put on oxycontin {morphine } and that gave me constipation ..but with movicol I was able to have a BM every other day no pain no blood .roll on to 2011 and I am in agony with my back 4 consultants would not touch me .but I found one that specialises in failed backs I ended up having the most horrendous surgery on my back .I don't know is any of you have had a fusion ALIF {anterior lumbar inter body fusion} but its a massive operation .and I am still in a lot of pain with that .and will be for the rest of my life .soon after the ALIF I noticed that I was having problems with BM and my abdomen was bloated and my appetite had changed {I have always been a vegetarian since I was a child} things that I liked I was unable to stomach I just felt unwell I told the consultant and he said that I have had major surgery and it would take up to 3 years to heal so here I am in pain not being able to sleep and having to take large amounts of oxycontin .this Easter I started with agonising abdominal pain [almost as bad as the night I had my ALIF} It was so bad I had to call the on call doctor he sent me to hospital and they diagnosed ;;;constipation ;;;; since Easter I have been back to hospital 3 times and to my doctors 7 times .one doctor at the hospital said he could see a loop of small bowel and I was referred to the colorectal surgeons for further tests so far I have had a CT VC and today I am going for a MRI SCAN with a barium meal and contrast I am scared and worried that I may have something nasty .my health has gone down hill I am tired all the time .I do have a good appetite and there is no blood when I pass a BM .being in pain all the time not being able to have any type of life is bad enough but fearing I now have another problem is driving me mad .I don't seem to be able to get an answer from anyone as to what it may be and the waiting is killing me .I don't do stress anymore I just can't cope .17 years of back pain and 10 years of only 2 hours sleep a night has taken its toll on me .I just hope that my bowel issue can be fixed medically rather than surgically ..have any of you people had a similar problems following spinal surgery ?? or is it just coincidental
