new symptom?

i've had crohn's for 25 years. always just tried to tolerate my symptoms...been hospitalized about 5 times or so..i now have had a new symptom and i am wondering if it sounds familiar to anyone..extreme swelling first on my knee six weeks ago..they told me i must have hit it or something..now my toe has extreme swelling..hot to the touch just like my knee was 6 weeks ago.like my knee this is extremely painful..has this happened to anyone else?

Hi jeannem and :welcome:

I'm glad you found your way here 'cause it is a fab place for support and info. I don't have Crohn's and my kids haven't had the symptoms you are now experiencing but there will be others here that have.

The swelling and pain you are experiencing could be arthritis associated with your Crohns or if your disease is located in the ileum you may have issues with re absorption of uric acid. This inability to reabsorb causes higher blood levels and increases your chances of developing gout. The acute onset, extreme pain, inflammation, swelling and now it's location in your toe sounds suspiciously like gout. It is normally treated with a drug like Colchicine but it may be contraindicated due to your Crohns.

Whatever it is I hope you get some relief soon...ouch!!!

Good luck, keep us posted and welcome aboard!

Take care,

Hi jeannem and welcome! Like Dusty said, many people with Crohn's have difficulty with arthritis, which can cause swelling. If this problem is causing you concern, I would certainly phone your GI. It doesn't hurt getting their opinion. Good luck!

PS - I am a Jersey girl, originally from Monmouth County.

Greetings jeannem, I'm glad you found your way here. It sounds like you got some good answers above and I don't have anything further to add there, but I wanted to say hi :) I hope to see you around the forum :)

Take care!
