Hi, my name is Debbie and I'm new to this. I was diagnosed with Crohns in Dec of 2011.
I am taking Pentasa, Entocort and, as of yesterday, Imuran. I am absolutley terrified of the side effect, especially from Imuran. I don't know that much about Crohns and really need some advise.

Deb, I am currently on Imuran for the 2nd time in my life. It does seem scary, knowing it will take your immune system down, and since I work for the public, that is a frightening thought. But honestly, so far the side effects have been minimal, and despite starting it both times in October, going into cold and flu season, I have not come down with colds, etc. The worst I can say this time is I seem to be more tired than I should be.

Hi Deb and welcome :) I'm glad you found your way here!

It's understandable that you're concerned about side effects. We have a Pentasa forum here, and an Imuran forum here where you can learn about side effects, ask people questions, and get a feel for things.

The big thing is getting those regular blood tests while you're on Imuran to keep an eye on things.

How are you feeling these days?

I wish you well :)

I was diagnosed a year ago last November. I remember how scared I was. I went through some difficult times, but I've made it.At first it seems overwhelming.

You ask: What happened? How did I get this? Why me? Then you discover, why NOT you. Heck, it's better than some diseases out there.

I've learned how to talk about my illness and not be frightened of it. I even blog about it.

Let people know how you feel, how scared you are about the future, drugs, and side-effects. Use this forum to find answers. There is a wealth of information on here and the people are wonderful.

Look for support from your family and friends, and as always, we are here for you too.

Hi Debbie, i am also new to the crohn's but i did have a liver transplant back in 1995. Ive been on immunosupressive drugs for years including Imuran. With some precautions like a lot of hand washing and a lot of germ x, im rarely sick. I work at a school and they pass stuff around all the time, but im usually healthy. Hope that eases your mind a little.

Hi Deb and welcome. I am on the Imuran for the 2nd time also but so far I have not had any issues. I have been feeling tired and a bit achy but I think this is more down to the fact that I am tapering off steroids right now. As David has mentioned it is important to get routine bloods tests done so if anything does change it is picked up quickly, once I am settled on my maintainence dose I am do have bloods done every 8weeks so check with your doc about this.

It is definetly good you have joined us so we can help with any queries you have. There is a wealth of information and support here froma wonderful group of people.

Wishing you well soon
