Hi all. My name is Will. Here is my story...

I'm 27 and I have had Crohn's for 14 years.

Almost died at 13 due to doctors in town being unable to diagnose me. My parents at the end of their rope with doctors unable to help tried me on a Celiac diet and that kept me alive long enough to get a referral out of town to a competent GI for an almost immediate diagnosis.

Asacol kept me in check for most of high school, then up to pentasa and then my first taste of prednisone, beudesonide, flagyl.

At that point I was second year university and facing my first resection. So now I have 6" less small bowel and luckily with imuran I was able to maintain remission for 6 years and a few education path changes.

With all that I quit school this past December, started a new career in January, bought my first house with the love of my life, and about to propose....

Go figure the perfect time for the Crohn's to come back. I have now been out of remission for the past 3 months. Evidently things aren't too bad as my GI has few words for me. I had to request him to be a little more aggressive for medication as he wanted to resume me on 100 mg of imuran, cipro and flagyl and see how things played out. So fortunately he listened and also prescribed 40 mg prednisone tapering over 8 weeks. Week 3 of prednisone seems to be the magic week as this week has given me the most consecutive days without issues. I'm at 5 days and counting of feeling "normal" weak but "normal". Still a few weeks away from a colonoscopy to see just how bad things really are up there...

What I have found with this flare up is that I am way out of touch with everything that has happened and been learned about Crohn's in the last 6 years.

I feel lucky to have found this community as well as the wealth of new information out there on the 'net. I look forward to getting back up to speed and back on track to managing this disease that I took for granted the last few years.

Hi Will and welcome to the forum! I am glad you pushed your GI to give your Pred. You obviously know your body best, and you knew you needed more. Hopefully, it will nip the inflammation in the bud. And it sounds like it is in fact doing the trick as you are tapering down smoothly.

So...did you end up popping the question??

7 days and counting of no issues! I picked up the ring today... Popping the question Friday night.... She doesn't suspect a thing...

Welcome! Hope you start feeling better soon and I am excited for you to propose. I just got engaged on July 9th this year. I had a hunch and was still overjoyed so the fact that she doesn't have a clue should be super fun. It inspires hope to know you had remission for 6 years even though you are not feeling well now. I just got diagnosed and have been feeling hopeless, but knowing that I could feel better one day even if it's temporary makes me feel better. I wish you all the best in your career and your relationship and all future endeavors

Good Luck for Friday night, it's so exciting.

Crazy how GI's jump up and down about routine scopes and when we need them we sometimes have to beg and then wait a few weeks, hopefully your scope will be soon and you can discuss new treatments if needed.
Can I ask did flare happen round time of house purchase or deciding to propose, I find if I am stressed or really excited I can have some issues. Last year I had my second child in june and bought my second house in sept, flared in Oct after 5 yr remission. I just finished 10 weeks of preds last week, so far so good, so will be sending you positive thoughts and hugs.

Yeah I don't understand the GIs sometimes. I see him when I'm fine and it's waste of time in the office so I don't bother and when I actually need to see him he reacts with no sense of urgency. Mine is known for his terrible bedside manner.

The flare ups started after December when I quit school and we started the house hunt. Then they just progressively got worse. I fully agree the stress of everything all in such a short time span was a factor in the flare ups.

My guess is it was kind of a "perfect storm" situation where really no matter what I did the Crohn's was coming back...

yeah mine was adamant that I have scope in Jan, I said I needed time to arrange child care as I didn't have children 5 yr ago at my last scope, then when I call to say I'm ready it's like oh ok then will be a few weeks, I was in flare but didn't think it was serious, I had a lot worse over the years, then they stop in middle of scope saying I was too inflamed and kept me in, they planned to do another scope later, I went back for results waiting to see if they had arranged scope and they said they got what they needed after all and come back in 3 mths (no scope needed) I was very confused.

I think you're right about perfect storm sometimes these things are just out of our control, almost like we have to hit our reset button. But I did find that my remissions are getting longer, first was over 2yrs, next 5yrs. So hopefully your next remission will go over 6.

Check back in with us and tell us how Friday goes.

Congratulations ! Im getting Married in 4 weeks , Far too much to do lol, Hope your Crohns Continues to improve :)

Hi Will, Welcome and Congatulations!

You are right that much has changed/advanced with Crohn's treatment even in the past 6 years. As you read and do your own research, it is important that you have a GI doc that listens and involves you in the treatment, so you can come up with a plan together. Each case of Crohn's is different and each treatment plan is different for each patient. You are your own best advocate!

Enjoy your engagement, glad you're feeling better and hope it continues.

Hi will,
welcome to the forum. i been here for a few weeks now and i feel it's best site ever. i've been so welcomed as if i was family. i have had crohn's for 21 years now and mine just flared up a few weeks ago and now on preds for a while a short while i hope. i am very proud of you and i hope yours will stay in remission for a long time. and yea GI specialists are a pain in the butt. haha best wishes

Thanks for all the kind words. This is such a great site. I have tons of reading and learning to do. Its such a huge thing to have somewhere to go and read about others experiences with this disease.

Hi Will,

Man, your story sounds almost identical to mine. I almost died too, and my mom had to force my stupid pediatrician to give me a blood test which lead to them seeing my out of control white blood cell count. She told my mom I was just "petite." So crazy. Glad you finally got diagnosed correctly and you are doing well, and congrats on the proposal! Married life is good! Hard, but good :)

Good luck!
Juli

This is a great forum! Welcome:) You are right, so much has changed. The approach doctors are taking these days go against everything we learned 10 years ago. There seems to be more surgeries than ever now. Hopefully they are getting closer to a cure everyday. Good luck and I'm glad the pred is working for you.
