new to this but need diet advice
Hello everyone,
I have been looking through this forum and thought I should join, incase I can possibly help or need help.
I am 41 years old from the UK, i was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when I was 20. After being told i was anorexic by the doctors because they automatically thought all young girls who were thin and unwell were all wrongly diagnosed with eating disorders. The hospital i was first taken too was making me eat my breakfast, complan drink at late morning, lunch, complan late afternoon, dinner then complan early evening. i was constantly sick and in pain. I was transferred to Hope hospital in Salford Manchester where i spent the next 12 weeks trying to put on weight to be strong enough for an operation. By the time i was diagnosed my weight had gone from 10 stone 8lbs to 5 stone 6lbs, truth is i was on deaths door and my parents were saving for my funeral.
I had my operation and had to be on a TPN (total parenteral nutrition) through a drip everyday. I was also left with a stoma, which at the age of 20 was very hard to cope with psychologically. The stoma was taken away after a while.
Since then i have had another 3 operations to take different parts of my bowel away.
Im now 41, its took me years but i can actually say i have learnt to live with it. Learnt the hard way regarding diet as what to eat and what foods to avoid. My last operation was approximately 9 years ago, i do have flare ups but i act quickly with steroids for a week or two.
i dont take any medication at all to help with crohn,s disease. I have two grown up children ages 21 and 14 who im proud of but equally i know there proud of me. I have spent the last 5 years studying to be a complementary therapeutic practitioner and graduate from university next month. studying was stressful but somehow i think it kept my mind occupied from my illness.
I have struggled over the last 20 years to keep weight on as being 5ft 7inches tall doesnt suit me to be too thin. over the past 2-3 years the weight has crept on and believe it or not im looking at dieting. The hard part of dieting is knowing what to eat as i cant eat salads, fruit, red meats, nuts, etc etc. most of the foods i cant eat, diets are recommending you to eat.
Does anyone have a diet plan for crohn's disease sufferers?
Thanks Karen
