Hi,

I am new to the forums and have a few questions. A little history, I have been struggling with what I thought was stomach issues for the last 9 years. My doctor told me a few weeks ago at my appointment that she is referring me to a GI doctor as she thinks I have possible Crohn's disease or UC. I'm waiting to hear back from the GI doctors office which can take months in Canada.

I apparently have the general symptoms of Crohn's but I'm also having other symptoms that are concerning and I just wanted to see if the symptoms I'm having are expected or concerning.

1. I woke up in the middle of the night last night disoriented and in extreme amounts of pain. The pain seemed to be radiating from my entire abdomen and my entire back, the pain was the worst in the centre under my shoulders. I have never felt so much pain. I had soft very thin bm :shifty: and then pain decreased in my abdomen about 30 mins after going to the bathroom. My pain in the back lasted another hour but felt better with a heating pad. Is this a "normal" symptom?

2. My entire stomach feels raw on the inside and I have a sensation on the right lower part of my abdomen that feels frozen like freezing you would get if you were getting stitches, mixed with pain.

3. A sensation of something moving through my intestines quickly.

Thanks for reading!!!

Hi Steph and welcome.

Glad you've been referred to a GI specialist. Your symptoms sound familiar.

A couple of recommendations that may help:

Write down all the questions you want to ask the doctor.
Keep a food and symptom journal to see if you can identify trigger foods.
You may want to cut dairy to see if you feel better.
Check out the Crohns and Colitis Canada website (the link is in my signature)

I'm sure others will be along soon.

Sending you my support.

Dave

Crohns and UC can manifest as very weird painful sensations and I can relate to all of the ones you mention except the freezing part. We all have wildly different experiences and descriptions of our pains etc. The radiating pain is not uncommon and can be very confusing. I agree with DJW, keep a list of symptoms for the referred doctor.

You are in pain, as such you should ask for an emergency appointment or even go to the ER. If you were a Crohn's patient, the symptoms you describe would be what a flare up could look like and the recommended course of action is inflammation control (e.g. Through corticosteriods) quite quickly instead of going through discomfort and pain for weeks or months.

Your symptoms are very vague and general, and Crohn's can produce so many different symptoms, it's really impossible to tell whether they are likely due to Crohn's or not.

If things are very bad, or are deteriorating, can you ask your doctor to push for an earlier appointment with the GI? Has your doctor done any blood tests? If there are abnormalities, these may warrant an earlier appointment.
