Hello Everyone!

I am the mother of newly diagnosed 2 year old little boy. He was diagnosed in May and the doctor started him on Sulfasalazine but now he as the beginning of an abcsess and we are trying Canasa (mesalamine) also. It is in suppository form and it is so hard to give it to him. We started on Friday night and now when we tell him it's bed time he won't even lay down to get his diaper on because he knows it's coming. Dealing with this disease just seems to get harder and harder.

WOW I'm so sorry to hear about your child. That's so young. How did you find out he had it? What were his symptoms?

Keeping my fingers crossed things start to get better for him soon

Hi and welcome
I'm so sorry your little boy had to get this disease so young . Its bad enough when they're a lot older. I hope things settle down quick.

Sorry to hear about your son. He is so young. You guys will be in my thoughts. So tough to explain a treatment to a toddler, much less get their cooperation Hang in there

So sorry about your son's diagnosis. Sending hugs your way. I can't imagine how hard it must be to get a toddler to cooperate when he can't really understand what's going on. I hope things get better soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about your son.
My girl is three and a half and I also know how hard it is at this age.
Matter of fact it's almost 1 am here and I'm up with worry over her.
Grace is still undiagnosed at this time but hopefully a dx will be coming soon.
Please feel free to pm any time.
I have to get back to bed and get some rest just in case she wake up again tonight.
Hang in there! Your not alone.

Hi I am new also the forum, I joined yesterday and already I've had great feedback , my son is 5 and like u he started with peri anal abscess at 2 , his first abscess needed 2 weeks of flagyl by intravenous infusion, he then proceeded to get one every 5 weeks because un be known to us he had developed Crohn's but it took 3 years to get a diagnonsis, your are in a really good position even though it properly dosnt feel like this as they will treat u for the Crohn's aswell as the abscess, Lewis needed his drained in December 2009 then he went on to get a fistula which was laid open he wasn't in any pain after he was more bothered about his cannula that they put in so try no to be worried about the after effects , he then went on to have the fistula laid open again in July 2012 and he has had no side effects from this since this time it was more invasive 1 inch either side of his rectum spincter he never even new he had had it done he woke up and said I'm starving mummy can I have a cheese sandwich , so please try not to worry even though you don't want this to be happening, the docs will treat for his Crohn's and maybe try and get his abscess under control and try and get him on new Meds so this didn't keep happening if we,d of got our diagnosis early his 2 nd and third op might not of been needed, what abs have they got him on Lewis last were vi Rodin and metronidozle as the co amoxicillin and flucocoxicillin didn't work I think u might have diff names in america but u could always as them to interpret, please keep us posted I.ll send positive thoughs all the way over the sea to u .lol.xxxxx

Sorry to here about your little boy. I have never had to deal with suppositories so no help there unfortunately. I can imagine, it must not be very pleasant. Are you allowed to put a little bit of vaseline over it so that it slides in easier? Might be worth getting him a sticker chart or a little treat for everytime he lets you do it. Hope things get better!

I'm so sorry to hear of your sons diagnosis. You will get great advice here.
My daughter is 10 and a reward chart is working fantastically with her as she has lots of Pills to take.
I hope he gets relief from his symptoms soon.
Take care x

Sorry to hear about your little boy... poor thing! I hope the meds get him feeling better soon!

Just a note on the suppositories, both my kids are much older now (18 and 19) but both, from birth would vomit as soon as we gave them any medication (baby acetaminophen, cold meds, antibiotics... didn't matter what it was!). Eventually, we realized our only option for fevers, etc. were suppositories (until they were about 5 years old, maybe even older??). I don't have any 'tips' on how to make it easier but just wanted to say that they do become accustomed to it and there is a bit of a side benefit... when they had fevers, colds/flus, nausea, etc., I never had to worry that I'd given them the medication and that they had brought it back up, didn't have to wonder should I give more?, is the fever not gone because they have no meds in them?, etc.

:ghug:

My daughter used to also have problems with oral meds and the only thing that worked for her were suppositories. When she was a toddler we waited until she was asleep, slipped the diaper down and inserted them with no problems.

Good Luck!

Wow Crohnsinct, that is such a good idea - it would never have occured to me to wait till they were asleep to put in the suppository. I bow down to your infinite wisdom!

crohnsinct- She must have been one hard sleeper.
Great idea.

We stopped giving it a bed time. She was starting to get worked up for hours afterward. We give hers an hour after dinner. That way she can cry it out and not associate it with bed time.

Thanks for all the tips ya'll! I wish I could say that one of them would work, but unfortunately he is the lightest sleeper and it has to be given before bed. We are using vaseline, the pharmacist recommended it.

I am so sorry....:( We did steroid enemas, but dd was 4 and just easier. My son is 2 and he would probably be just like your lo. I would use a reward system, though-we have used them for izz for many things (particularly awful meds; scopes; MRI; and hospitalizations all come with prizes.) Bloodwork prizes have been phased out-she no longer cries and picks stickers that her brother will like. <3 Best of luck...I know it is tough!!

I am sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis, but I know how you are feeling. My son was 26 months when he was diagnosed, so so young.
