Hi, everyone,

I was just diagnosed with UC this past July so it's still very brand new to me. I had about three weeks of bleeding, diarrhea, and weight loss (but, surprisingly, no pain). I ended up having a colonoscopy and biopsy, which confirmed my diagnosis. I was put on a bland diet and I started taking Lialda. A few days after taking Lialda my symptoms started to improve and I have been relatively symptom-free for a few weeks.

But I am also still struggling with the anxiety of the disease, including fear of being left alone, going out in new places (this past weekend I went to Sea World and it was anxiety-provoking). I'm getting so tired of the bland diet but I have started to slowly go back to eating some of the foods I was before. But I still feel depressed and anxious...just wanted to know if any of you have felt the same way...and what helps you overcome the anxiety and depression?

I was just diagnosed in May, so I'm still pretty new to all of this too. I've been pretty depressed. I went to a yoga class last week, and that was helpful. I've been thinking about talking to my PCP about the depression.

Best wishes to you!

I have started meditation and I have done some walking (but will start some light jogging tomorrow) in order to cope with the anxiety/depression. I've also started drinking chamomile tea (which I've heard promotes relaxation as well as helps with digestion). It's just overwhelming to me because my life changed so quickly. I also have Type 1 Diabetes, but I've had that for 26 years and it doesn't bother me...I live with it. It's different with UC, though. I don't know if it's because I've been diagnosed with UC as an adult, or if it's just a hugely traumatic thing.

Hello Kristin :) Unfortunate that you are diagnosed with UC...But don't loose hope or let any negative thoughts rule your mind. That's most important!! First things first. Just follow with the medication that your doctor has advised you religiously. Next thing is that gain as much info about UC as much possible from Google or anywhere you can. BUT DO NOT LET THE NEGATIVITY CONTROL YOU!!! There are many negative answers for this disease like it has no cure or this disease is incurable. But if we just believe it and read it and put it into our mind, then in daily life it would put its ugly head up and would leave us dead and defeated. So be POSITIVE!! One thing you are doing is absolutely correct that is Yoga or meditation. Do not be obsessed about thinking that you are having UC and ponder over it. Control your diet, ie avoid spicey foods, sugar, milk products etc. Follow a chart of the foods you seem to feel better with. For loose stools you can take Probiotics which i am sure your doctor would have told. And consult another doctor so that you can get a better resolution. God bless you :)

And about depression i can understand dear..because the feeling of having the need to pass stool or something like that when you are around with people or in midst of a party is embarassing...But accept that you are having this problem like many others who are having AIDS, Asthma, Cancer etc. Nobody's perfect in this world or disease free. LOVE YOURSELF :) :)And keep continuing with the meditation for atleast half an hour daily and while doing it close your eyes and say within that with each passing breath you are being cured...Thank God for the life he has given you and brought you into this world :) Trust me YOU WILL BE ALL FINE :):)

AND...to give you encouragement and confidence....i am repeating again in this forum the same thing and it may bore people off LOLZ:lol::ylol2:! Here in India there are many people who have been cured of UC through Pranayama even though its said that IBD can't be cured...So there you go :) Pranayama is a set of breathing techniques and you can find it in Google by searching for it :) All the best :)
