Night Sweats

Hello,

Lately I have been having a flare up, and have been waking up in the middle of the night drenched from sweat. It is gross and uncomfortable. I have tried less and lightweight clothing, but it does not make a difference.

Any advice on how to be able to sleep through the night without waking up in a puddle?

Do you fever or chills? Abnormal pain? Can be the sign of an infection like an abscess. I have what you described when I had one.

They certainly can be due to infection and abscess as NGNG says. I didn't have either of these (knowingly) when I had mine. I always felt mine were the onset of a cold or flu, but the symptoms were gone the next day. When they were occurring, there wasn't anything I could do to stop them. As far as coping goes, I slept on towels and kept spares nearby. It at least made the cleanup in the middle of the night a whole lot quicker.

Yep, I second what shamrock15 said. When I had bad night sweats I slept with one towel underneath me and another on top, then at least you don't have to change the sheets in the middle of the night or sleep on wet sheets and go from boiling hot and sweating to cold and shivering.

I did have a post-surgical abscess though - and I'd been sent home with the night sweats and increasing levels of pain *eyeroll* - so an abscess or infection is something you might want to query with your doctors. But there can be other reasons for night sweats.

Huh, I never knew night sweats could be related to inflammation - guess that's why there were on the "symptoms" list at the GI! I don't get them all the time, but coincidentally, I am getting them now, and things are bad.

Anyway, my trick is no pjs, fleece sheets, a mattress pad, and a waterproof mattress cover under that. The fleece sheets wick most of the moisture away from my body, and often I can make it through a 7 hour night before I have to change anything. The mattress doesn't get soaked, and the pad is washable in my big washing machine (a luxury I realize).

I get them when I am flaring (even a mild flare). I asked the Doc about them once , in case it was a sign of early menopause or something. He didn't make much of it, said it was to be expected with crohns. I find they seem to be linked to vivid dreams too, weirdly. I haven't found any way to get round them , I never wear clothes anyway. As others have said towels are handy.

Thank you everyone! I have been trying the towels and they are helping a little. I feel better at least that I amnote the only one with them. :)
