No more steak for me :'(

Thoroughly enjoyed having a tasty sirloin steak for my dinner last night as a wee treat that I haven't had in a while unfortunately my guts didn't seem to agree. Spent a good portion of the evening on the toilet with horrible stomach pains and diarrhoea. Still waiting on biopsy results from my colonoscopy 4 weeks ago because my gastro consultant went on holiday. Fed up waiting! I've a holiday myself in 5 weeks time to a country where you can't flush toilet paper.....that should be fun...
 
This happened to me last week...and I'm so sad!!! :yfrown: I love beef and use it in almost all our meals...so now I'm super conscious of how much beef I eat. I've been tracking my meals and symptoms...and excess beef always leads to diarrhea.

UnXmas I had steak a couple of months ago when out for a meal with a friend which resulted in me having diarrhoea but didn't make the connection at the time. Fairly sure the steak is the culprit unfortunately.
Edentenley I seem to be fine with beef in the form of burgers or when I make a casserole in the slow cooker, just seems to be a nice lovely tasty bit of steak I can't handle.
 
Any chance it was seasoning on the steak? I know every one of us is different, but steak is a major part of my diet. Seasoning has made a difference - too much pepper wrecks me. If you are fine with burger meat, it points to preparation as the issue for you.
 
Maybe a more tender steak like a filet would be better? Hope it's just been a fluke for you :(
 
Can you eat steak if you prepare it yourself at home? I have better luck with meals I make myself. Had too much trouble with restaurants.

I also have some trouble with steak. i found the rarer i ate it the more upset my bowels would be. i love steak so i try and do it well done and it helps a little. i think red meat in itself may just be hard to digest, even for a healthy gut.

and good luck with the country with no bog roll.... that would put the fear of god up me :)

Shamrock15 I didn't use any seasoning because I know that foods with loads of herbs, spices, seasoning etc. set me off.
Asher I find that I can eat big chunks of beef if I slow cook it so I think the more tender the better.
The Real MC I've had steak both in a restaurant and at home, both times resulting in an upset stomach.
Danico85 nice to hear from a fellow weegie! I hate steak when it's well done lol. Find it too tough and chewy, prefer it medium rare myself. Yeah the thought of not being able to flush toilet roll when I have a dodgy stomach is worrying me :S
 
I believe the medium rare is the problem.
If rare or medium rare the immune system will see the steak as a foreign protein.
If cooked well the protein will be denatured and not look foreign to the immune system,
or perhaps not even look like a protein at all.

I absolutely cannot tolerate any red meat or pork. Bith cause me to have horrible D and cramps. I sure miss eating steak though :(
 
Similar to me - burgers/chilli con carne is fine as the meat is broken down already but steak is a mount everest climb, or so it feels like it.
I run a mild fever, which I'm assuming is due to increase in effort and that itself can produce diarrhea.
When I have steak, its a mini steak and I overchew a small bit to see if I can ease it.
I do avoid the sauces that come with it, but thats due to fat content.

Kikig do you find how the steak is cooked makes a difference to your symptoms? i.e. Medium rare as opposed to well done.

Fascinating article wildbill_52280! I recently started eating more vegetables and fruits and have found that as soon I eat animal proteins, I have more symptoms. Guess I will continue to eat the healthier options and see how it goes. :)
 
This is interesting because I have a Jpouch and beef stops me up (a good thing) though I don't eat meat often. My healthy husband says beef constipates him if he eats to much. So...there's something about beef (and I buy the humane, organic stuff so it's not additives). I would eat it sparingly with spinach, a beer or another natural laxative if it's causing problems. Walking is good for moving the bowel. Good luck.

Oddly enough no, the cooking degree makes little difference. I even had a steak recently which was medium (barely in my opinion) and it almost caused less trouble than the well done.

Maybe the well done means more digestive juices have to get involved to break down a tougher texture.

I confess, I don't eat red meat that often and I restrict it to small amounts because I know its going to take longer to digest and I hate that solid non-movement feeling in my stomach.
That feeling has nothing to do with IBD, I've always noticed it when I eat red meat. When I make it at home, I tenderize it with lemon or lime first or slow cook it.

Perhaps I am not naturally built to be a big meat eater in the first place, who knows?
 
A scattering of "lateral thinking" observations..
I've always quite liked a meal of simple grilled meat with salad or vegetables. Australian conditioning at work!
Since my Crohn's Disease diagnosis(colonic inflammation only), I've been attempting to pin down assorted "trigger" foods
For the past 3-4 years beef/steak has been somewhat problematic - almost always causing "D"
A couple of time when we've been visiting the USA I've thrown caution to the winds and indulged in their wonderful "prime rib"
On the first venture, I wondered if I had seriously erred - there was a sense of "impending doom", is only way to describe it. Only diarrhoea resulted, and I survived the long haul flight home.
More recently at home (Aus), we've been having fairly regularly beef/steak meals without any problems
Question is, is MAP a part of this equation? Are there differing MAP levels in beef in the US compared with Australia? Is it a simply a physiological response to linoleic acid?Has my immune system sorted out what is problematic in a steak?
